The Second IVO Quantum drive that has been launched to orbit will start tests. If it raises the altitude of the satellite 63235 as measured by the SMA (Semi Major Axis) then this will be evidence that a worldchanging propulsion system works. We can follow the tests with Norad radar tracking of the satellite. Currently at 511.2 kilometers. We would want to see it rise. In a recent YouGov poll, the vast majority of Germans and Brits have a negative opinion about Musk, think it is unacceptable that he tries to influence politics (in Germany more so than in the UK) and think he is ill-informed. Confirms my personal impression.

I've been taking on some of the criticism of the concept of Mars colonisation that are popular. There is confusion even among people with a science background (like Sabine Hossenfelder, Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Martin Rees) about the challenges of Mars, and what a colony would be like. There are misunderstandings about the radiation environment, confusion about terraforming vs colonisation, etc. which I think could be resolved by SpaceX and NASA publishing a more comprehensive long term vision.

This is one of the wildest podcasts I’ve ever seen. I just wrapped a 2.5-hour deep dive on string theory with Peter Woit (Not Even Wrong) and Joseph Conlon (Why String Theory). Two sharp minds, two entirely opposing views. I’m not here to tell you who’s “right.” This is about the future of fundamental physics. It’s historic that the door is opening for these sorts of conversations to occur publicly and at length, with as much time given to each party as they need, while keeping it respectful, productive, and, of course, technical (it is TOE, after all). Some see string theory as being given a free pass (held to a different standard than competing theories). Some see it as a tool for probing high-energy YM/GR. Others see it as the best hope we have for a final theory of everything. The fact that this conversation even exists is remarkable, and I’m honored to play a small role in making it happen.
