POV: Inside the firing room in 1990 during the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. Discovery launched #OTD as part of the STS-31 mission. With five astronauts onboard, its primary goal was to deploy @NASAHubble. The rocket launch itself can be seen through window on the top left.
One of NASA's greatest photographers was launched on this day in 1990! Space Shuttle Discovery launched with the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the world's largest and most versatile space telescopes, as part of STS-31. Learn about Hubble's origins: go.nasa.gov/4baiTZa
It's been a busy year! As we mark our launch anniversary today, catch up with Hubble's latest and greatest observations from its past year in orbit. Find out more about the mission at nasa.gov/hubble.
#OTD in 1990, @NASAHubble was launched into orbit! 🚀 Celebrate the @NASA way, by learning which cosmic wonder the space telescope observed on your birthday! Click to explore: science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble…
Take a tour through Hubble's 34th anniversary image with our senior project scientist, Dr. Jennifer Wiseman! The Little Dumbbell Nebula is an expanding shell of glowing gases around a dying star, located about 3,400 light-years away. Find out more: go.nasa.gov/3vUfcYI
Hubble's bubble! 🫧 This blue "bubble" surrounding a massive, late-stage star is called a Wolf-Rayet nebula. It was created when speedy stellar winds interacted with the outer layers of hydrogen ejected from the star! For more on this #HubbleClassic: go.nasa.gov/44abHKc
So close, yet so far... The galaxy and bright star in this #HubbleFriday image might look close together, but they're over 129 million light-years apart! This is a trick of perspective from Hubble's vantage point in low-Earth orbit: go.nasa.gov/4aHgs0a
This Hubble image might look like it got marked up with white pen, but it's actually a photobombing asteroid's trail as it moves through Hubble's field-of-view! These sorts of observations help get a census of the asteroid population in our solar system: go.nasa.gov/3U5gkR7
Good news from our future telescope teammate @NASARoman – its mirrors passed vision testing! Roman has a primary mirror the same size as Hubble’s primary mirror, but with a larger field-of-view to gather sweeping survey observations of our universe once it launches in 2027. ⬇️
Good news from our future telescope teammate @NASARoman – its mirrors passed vision testing! Roman has a primary mirror the same size as Hubble’s primary mirror, but with a larger field-of-view to gather sweeping survey observations of our universe once it launches in 2027. ⬇️
Hello, Moon! 🌕 #OTD 25 years ago, this Hubble image of our Moon's Copernicus crater was released. This crater stretches 58 miles wide (93 kilometers)! It was formed when an asteroid over a mile wide slammed into the Moon a billion years ago. For more: go.nasa.gov/4d21OSL
Meet NGC 2146. At 70 million light-years away, the galaxy in this #HubbleClassic view has an odd feature seen at front-and-center. One of its spiral arms looks looped in front of the galaxy's core, likely caused by a nearby galaxy's gravitational pull: go.nasa.gov/4d16jgn
Hubble helped show what humans are capable of in space. 🧑🚀 Astronauts went on five servicing missions to the telescope, completing complicated spacewalks to repair and upgrade Hubble. Learn more for #InternationalDayOfHumanSpaceFlight: go.nasa.gov/3vRxuK4
A hundred million light-years away, billions of stars shine in the galaxy IC 4633. This #HubbleFriday image shows a hub of activity and starbirth – but you might notice in the lower right regions, it's a little obscured by a nebula within our own galaxy: go.nasa.gov/49yFmha

Hubble's 34th launch anniversary is this week! 🥳 We're celebrating with this new image of the Little Dumbbell Nebula. Located about 3,400 light-years away, this nebula formed when lobes of gas expanded out from a dying star at the center. For more: go.nasa.gov/49OpEP1
A marvelous gift from @NASAHubble on its 34th anniversary! Since launching in 1990, Hubble has made 1.6 million observations of over 53,000 astronomical objects. Thank you, Hubble, for your continued contributions to science and our understanding of the universe.

Starkissed and loving it! 🤩 This dazzling @NASAHubble image showcases NGC 1651: a star-packed, 120-light-year-wide globular cluster. Globular clusters like this are stable, concentrated groups of 1,000s to millions of stars, all bound by gravity. More: go.nasa.gov/3TYRy6x

In the largest @NASAHubble program ever executed, scientists collected information on ~500 stars over a three-year period. Now they're ready to dive into the data to glean new insights into the stars' formation, evolution and impact on their surroundings: go.nasa.gov/3ISGtNY
Jets blast across space, slicing through the gas and dust of a nebula in this new @NASAHubble image. The bright object to the far right (hidden by a dark lane of dust) is a forming star, FS Tau B, surrounded by material that can eventually form planets: go.nasa.gov/3PwaarB
No Sunday scaries here. The Spider Galaxy is named for looks, not inhabitants! 🕷️ This @NASAHubble image shows an irregular galaxy that lies about 30 million light-years away. Its distorted arms with glowing, star-forming tips give this galaxy its name: go.nasa.gov/3TOsoHJ
Pity the brown dwarf? Not a planet, not a star, but something in between. Not even brown. These red objects are often born with a binary companion, like many stars, but over time they drift apart due to the pull of passing stars. go.nasa.gov/3TJT10h
