Severe weather will be likely this evening into tonight. All modes of severe weather will be possible including large (greater than 2 inches in diameter), damaging winds (in excess of 70 mph), and a few strong tornadoes. In addition flash and river flooding will also be possible.
An additional 1 to 3 inches of rain are expected through Sunday. This may lead to flash and river flooding especially for areas south of Highway 36 where 2 to 4 inches of rain has already fallen. As such, a flood watch is in effect through noon Sunday.

A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Iowa, Kansas and Missouri until 9 PM CDT
3 PM Update: A cluster of storms across southeast Kansas continues to lift northeast towards west-central Missouri. Additional clouds are building across eastern Kansas. This area continues to be monitored for additional development over the next few hours.
Storms have developed across northeast Kansas. These storms will lift NE into southeast Nebraska. Additional storms may develop farther south, potentially building into northwest Missouri. A tornado watch is in effect for Atchison, Nodaway and and Holt MO counties through 7 PM.
A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska until 7 PM CDT
There is an elevated risk of severe weather this evening and then again tomorrow night across the region. Now is the time to develop a plan (if you don't have one already) in the event that severe weather threatens your area.
We've been fielding some questions this morning on what the threat levels mean so here is the reference. Some additional interesting info...we average less than one moderate per year somewhere in our forecast area. Our last high risk day was in 2008! (and let's keep it that way)

Gusty winds continue thru the afternoon. Please refrain from burning as winds may cause fires to get out of control quickly. Scattered high clouds encroach upon the area tomorrow adding some haziness and intermittent obstructions to eclipse viewing.

I finally attended a spotter class, as long as I’ve liked weather, I just never found time or was aware of one to late to attend, but I finally got it done this year. Always good to be reminded of all the things to look for. Great Presentation @NWSKansasCity
