I don’t know who needs to hear this… Teaching a literacy curriculum program like a script, lesson-by-lesson, to all kids without considering their current interests, abilities, and needs: - is not scientific - drains the joy out of learning - leads to inequities

Most of us choose to read for the pleasure of it--relaxation, curiosity about a topic, the love of a story well told. We start there. So why do we start with lesser fare when teaching students to read? It's not words in isolation that inspire but well crafted words by an author.

My daughter was just lamenting about her required AP reading. She so astutely said, “I bet if I’d chosen to read it I might like it, but I’m distracted because I just keep thinking about the book I want to read.” Yep. Motivation is EVERYTHING!

@SusanBneuman I always refer to it as "context" when we start a unit. That way it does take away the implication that people should/do know it.
@SusanBneuman Maybe prior knowledge is better? Even still I often run into the challenge of teachers thinking this is static and only refers to what students arrive to class with. Easy to misunderstand the idea that the most significant determinant of building new knowledge is prior knowledge.
@SusanBneuman When lesson planning I consider what students bring to the learning & think about the "ABCs of Background Knowledge". Do I need to "Activate" it, "Build" it or along with activating "Connect" to it as Ss consider a text, concept, issue? #FailSafeStrategies
@SusanBneuman How about just knowledge? Doesn't this knowledge we are talking about also include knowledge of syntax, morphology, discourse, text structure, as well as everything in the world? We don't seem to refer to knowledge of syntax, morphology, etc also as knowledge but it is.
An open-question: Should we avoid the term “background’ knowledge? This assumes that children must rely on experiences they either have had (or not). Wouldn’t it be more equitable to say 'building knowledge’? This assumes a shared experience for all students in your class.
@RacheGabriel @HelenProulx2 I feel like the folks who are the loudest on curriculum adoption reform, rarely consider this. But I think those who have taught think about this often. It’s a good reminder that many of the loudest voices have never even taught before.
Curriculum is a dependent variable. You can rate it, but it's value DEPENDS on #infrastructure, instructional context & human resources That's why there are 0 validated curriculum rating tools. Just different organizations signaling what they value in the form of a rubric.
