Our program uses the terms 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th Vowel Sounds. "a", for example is /a/cat, /ae/able, and /o/father (3 sounds). "u" is /u/cut, /ue/unit, /oo/truth, and /oul/push (4 sounds). During decoding, the student is taught to try the first sound, then the second,…

Very interesting discussion here that could (should?) result in a modification of some reading curricula, ours included.

This is a new one to me, but, as I discussed in one of the comments, it makes perfect sense to teach the consonant sound of "w" as "woo" and the consonant sound of "y" and "yee." Kids will find it much easier to blend those consonant sounds if that is done. I hope this is adopted…

In countries with orthographies that are more transparent (the phonics in their spellings is more straightforward, unlike English), the "dyslexic" child learns to read the words, but struggles with fluency, per some research. Wouldn't this indicate that the root cause of poor…
In a discussion on how much of the phonics code young students can handle, I was arguing that we should just tell them immediately that some letters (and digraphs) can represent more than one sound. The McGuinness's in Reading Reflex convinced me of that a long time ago. I came…
The best thing that could happen to a teacher happened to me: Yesterday during class, one of the teens I am teaching to read told me she was reading in another one of her classes and came across words she didn’t know She said instead of giving up or guessing she took a moment…
Interesting. Support for vision therapy from an organization seeking to help LD students. Seems that symptoms of vision issues, ADHD, and dyslexia have a significant overlap, and the vision issues can be addressed.

Good discussion topic here.

Did you know that sugar is the only word in the English language where the ‘su’ makes a ‘sh’ sound. Someone questioned me but I said I was pretty sure about it.
An efficient way to decode multisyllable words is to chunk them, ignoring syllables, and instead stop each chunk after the vowel sound. That puts the emphasis on one of the more difficult aspects of English, the requirement to test various phonemes for each vowel spelling. A…

@ShawnaCoppola This is harmful to children. There is no reading differently. Not a thing. Cognitive demands for middle school readers are higher than ever before. To meet these demands, they have to be able to read. Like really read. Not differently. But like decode, comprehend, make meaning.
There are 570k+ teachers just in the UK. They can't all be doing it differently. There must be some common strategies that more successful teachers are ALL doing. We should be studying those classrooms & teachers. What are they doing in their context that makes them successful?
@bphillipsonMP The child's eyes are not working together. We need real vision therapy that actually ensures that children have excellent binocular vision & visual processing. That currently hardly exists in the UK. youtube.com/watch?v=OPeLdQ…
”For skilled readers, phonological coding may be consciously experienced as inner speech, or the voice they hear in their head during reading.” (Ashby/Rayner)

@PresidentPat You need to review phonics with them. They need to practice letter sounds.
@PresidentPat Give them the CORE Phonics screener. Teach them the spelling/phonics they are missing. Might also be a good way to ID kids who need assessment for IEP.
@PresidentPat Spelling patterns are easy to teach and don’t take a lot of time. Roots/affixes are a good place to start and you could teach a pattern or two in addition to the root/affix each week.
@PresidentPat 5th gr perspective: find ways to talk about words that come up in books, wtg, history, science. Show Ss how words work, how to build words, & how to take them apart (like word families or patterns). Just shining some light on this will heighten their awareness/thinking/spelling.
@PresidentPat I teach HS SpEd English and spelling is a major issue. I’ve found that Tier 2 vocabulary that appear in the texts we’re reading, etymology, and prefix/suffix work all help. Leveraging their spoken/conversational vocabulary is actually really helpful as a starting place too.
@buckingham_j @SWLiteracy @c_mackechnie The problem is that many teachers stop teaching phonics once their class has taken the Y1 PSC & phonics decoding is never tested again. It’s not me, it’s you – the problem with the phonics screening check linguisticphonics.wordpress.com/2020/12/16/its…
@SusanGodsland @SWLiteracy @c_mackechnie Don’t you think this is missing the point of the Year 1 PSC? It’s designed to assess decoding at one point in time and reflects reasonable expectations for that point. There are many things it doesn’t assess.
@SusanGodsland @c_mackechnie I think it’s important that teachers know there’s still much more that phonics helps with, even for children making good progress. Specially in spelling where phonics is often not used at all - it’s not time to “move on from phonics” in Y2 - it’s time to bed it in as a strategy.

@erincandy So very sorry. The dizziness is just terrible. My eyes were one of my worst triggers. I got some vision therapy and it fixed my eyes. I don't get them very often anymore. It was a long journey of trying to figure things out. This happened before Covid.
What's your opinion? Is teaching <y> and <w> as "yee" and "woo" as bad as teaching <t> as "tuh"?
