I would like to congratulate The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and its leader, President Duma Boko, for reaching the decisive 31-seat threshold required to secure a majority in parliament. This victory marks a pivotal moment for #Botswana, symbolising the will of its people and their aspiration for change and progress. I also wish to recognise the statesmanship demonstrated by President Mokgweetsi Masisi, in conceding defeat and facilitating a peaceful transition of power after 58 years of uninterrupted rule by his party. This act is a testament to the strength and maturity of Botswana’s #democracy and serves as an example for our region and beyond. True leadership is reflected in respect for the voice of the electorate. The conduct of these elections has set a high standard. The transparency shown, including fair coverage of opposition leaders by state media, underscores the resilience of Botswana’s democratic institutions and the people’s right to choose their leadership. This milestone is not just a victory for one party, but a resounding affirmation of democratic ideals. Let this moment be a reminder to entrenched regimes across the continent that power is transient. The essence of leadership lies in serving with humility. Unwillingness to recognise the winds of change only exposes the fragility of unchecked power. To the people of Botswana, we send our best wishes for the future under this new administration. May President-elect Duma Boko and his government continue to uphold and strengthen the democratic values that this election has so clearly embodied. As we head into the weekend.. I'm reflecting on the recent performances of our #Zimbabwe Warriors against #Kenya and #Cameroon (which were commendable). Unfortunately, these successes could not be celebrated on home soil. Had these games taken place in front of our home fans, it could have been another historic moment for #Zimbabwean football. However, it has now been 3 years since our National Sports Stadium was banned from hosting international games, and there is still no indication of when the ban will be lifted. The government is talking of 2025 but why does it have to take so long???? The situation has forced our players to travel across #Africa, playing in #Rwanda, #Uganda, and South Africa - like children without a home, even though we possess the resources and capacity to resolve this issue. We all saw how swift government sprung into action to improve infrastructure for visiting dignitaries during the #SADC summit, yet no similar urgency is applied to refurbish a National Sports Stadium in #Zimbabwe for our athletes. This neglect is not only detrimental to our young footballers but raises a deeper question.. how can we, as a nation, allow our talents to be seen as "homeless" across the continent in this way - yet we have the means? The government’s inaction reflects poorly on its priorities and sends a troubling message about its commitment to supporting our national identity and pride through sports. In political terms, this highlights the imbalance in policy implementation, where foreign diplomacy and optics are prioritised over domestic development. If the government of #Zimbabwe can quickly improve infrastructure for international visitors, the lack of attention given to our National Stadium suggests an absence of political will and misaligned priorities.
