My office was right by the encampment, and I cannot understand how it interferes with exams. It’s that little red circle. Not a single notable the protest in the history of modern protest would meet the requirements of “acceptable” protest from many past free speech advocates.

Not relevant to the specific point being made here, but this is in general a much better way to contextualize historical dollar figures than the usual approach using price indexes.

And, on his blog, JW Mason argues that there is a Keynesian vision that is much more radical than our familiar idea of Keynesian economics. jwmason.org/slackwire/keyn…
The launch of the Keynesian Revolution can be dated to October, 1932. That is when Keynes returned to Cambridge to deliver, not his old lectures on “The Pure Theory of Money,” but a new set of lectures on “The Monetary Theory of Production”. jwmason.org/slackwire/keyn…
Read this slowly and cometely compadres Its both soothing and provocative Like right off the bat On the intetest rate : "the price of goods today versus goods tomorrow, or ....the price of money." :

A great example of what Josh is talking about here about how investment can set up systems of people who focus on crafting use values that happen to make some money who are then displaced by managers who seek to maximize market returns. wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-ki…

Jodi Dean, a tenured professor at Hobart and William Smith College, has been suspended from teaching because of a political opinion she posted. Tis is an obvious and blatant violation of the most basic principles of academic freedom.
A core Keynesian idea in the international sphere is that trade flows are mainly a function of income growth rather than relative prices. IMO this is important background to current industrial-policy debates. If I had time to write anything, would love to write something on this.
I was on KPFA UpFront yesterday, talking about inflation. I'm afraid the audio quality is quite bad - I need to get a better audio setup. kpfa.org/player/?audio=…
The short-term impact is debatable. But over a longer horizon it seems hard to deny that othe effect of higher interest rate hikes will be to make housing more expensive, not less.

It’s simply a false claim!
Making up leftists to get mad at when most of the urbanist movement is leftists lmao
Conservatives think upzoning will bring bad people into the neighborhood (criminals, poor people, transients, foreigners), while leftists think upzoning will bring bad people into the neighborhood (young professionals, students, transients, foreigners). They're very different
Victory to the students and their allies, victory to the Palestinian people
@MaxJerneck Lol sooooo many people believed that. It was the default view. Literal magical thinking.
I've studied the history of solar energy and it never once occured to me that people might think that the technology would get cheaper with time by itself without mass production. What a bizarre belief
Did we misunderstand Moore's Law? (Yes.) Could we have left fossil fuels in the dust 25 years ago if we hadn't? (Probably.) My column this week - enjoy... on.ft.com/3UK0xsJ
@JWMason1 But if you do that you can't say "everyone alive today is better off than a king in the middle ages because a king in the middle ages never got to taste doritos"
@JWMason1 @TheStalwart I remember 6th grade "career day" (circa 1975) when parents came in to talk about their jobs. A grocery store owner mentioned that he made about $9,000 per year. I was told by my parents that was about average for our community (Midwestern middle class)
@JWMason1 Same. Every time I dip into this literature I come away feeling like there’s no obvious rule and how it will play out in any given instance is very context-dependent. (Which is true for quite a good deal of interesting economic questions.)
If you buy beets without the greens you are a SUCKER
@JWMason1 How inconvenient the Niskanen center is for this discourse lol
@JWMason1 I tend to think of this stuff in a Classical - Keynesian frame: if you’ve got “low surplus” conditions it’s easier to capture quasi-rents, but it’s still an institutions question at any level of surplus. Need public development expansion with rent regulation of some kind imo.
One of the worst anti-YIMBY arguments I can imagine. Clearly nobody knows the exact number of units needed to depress rents to a certain amount. But the goal would be to keep build until a certain affordability threshold is reached.
NYC needs more housing supply but no one ever explains how many units you need to actually "fix" the problem of high rents. YIMBYs are aggressively analytic until you ask for an actual threshold for what would make a median one-bedroom apartment in NYC rent for less than $2,000.
@JWMason1 @arjun_jayadev This is, as usual per you, an incredible text. Profound but accessible, very timely also
This is really fucking good, for everybody from beginners to experts in political economy, from @JWMason1: jwmason.org/slackwire/keyn…
it’s my professional opinion, as a licensed Explainer, that Both Sides are to blame
The obsession with Columbia is so depressing. Nearly everyone involved is behaving terribly in one way or another, and it's crowding out discussion of the actual horrors going in Gaza
@JWMason1 Great to hear! Thanks for your perspective. I'm not in academia currently so maybe I'm reacting more to these other things not being as visible
@JWMason1 It's not but it was an essay on well known publishers blog so it *seems* worse.
As someone who thinks academics are annoying, I think people who construct their whole personalities around academics being annoying are annoying.
