@Mattersofmymind @CharneGraham No, it's not an advert to work from them. Go to their website and look. They recruit for projects. It's a lot like Mechanical Turk in that you can get paid to perform some random task or participate in a data collection project. Some of those projects require a certain skin tone.

@Mattersofmymind @CharneGraham Okay, but I am in the industry and I do know. And what I'm saying is correct. If my product is 10k pictures of faces of X ethnicity, and you are Y ethnicity, should I pay you to provide a picture I know I can't use?

@Mattersofmymind @CharneGraham They provide training data for machine learning. If a machine learning company wants to test how well their model works with X ethnicity and buys a data corpus from Appen, being X ethnicity literally is the job requirement. There is no other requirement.

@StepMuhva @CharneGraham Maybe. Do you have a paper you can link to? But as somebody in the industry, 99% of the time when a company says they use AI they really just mean "it does something." Same with the general public.

@MattieVvv @sSynite @CharneGraham It isn't a "hiring process" so much as it's a gig. If a customer pays them to collect data on 10k people of a certain ethnicity, they'll only offer that gig to people of that ethnicity. This isn't a corporate accounting job or anything like that, it's "spend 10 doing x for $10."

@kateinthecloset @kevSumner @CharneGraham It does, just not on that specific page. The site could be more clear, but for example if they are collecting data related to a specific ethnicity, you aren't going to be eligible if you aren't of that ethnicity.

Say Company A wants to buy 10k faces of a certain ethnicity to test their facial recognition software. They'll go to Appen and Appen will find 10k different people of that ethnicity and pay them for participating. It's not a reg job.

@kevSumner @CharneGraham I don't think there are any interviews here. It's a task-oriented side-hustle type thing, not a full time corporate job. They probably have a client that bought a database of 50k photos of faces of various skin tones so they can test their facial recognition product.
