We really don’t realize how hard it is to manage our thoughts and feelings until difficult times hit us. Piece of cake when things are going great. How we are at our worst times is what matters. Mindfulness Matters MindStates Matter Mindset Matters @GBACoach
Many coaches do things they think is making their players “tough” when in reality it is breaking them down and hindering & weakening their mental & physical growth. Coaches, Do SMART Hard.
Try “grinding” as much on your nutrition, sleep, academics, mindset, relationships, respect, responsibility, accountability, etc as you claim you do on “skill” work & travel ball games. You’ll be a much better & happier player. @GAShotCoach
STOP WORSHIPPING THE GRIND. Worship doing & being smart. Doing what is required (which is usually a lot). Nothing wrong with doing hard unless you’re being stupid at the same time. Wasting time & risking injury is stupid just to say you’re “grinding.” Do SMART Hard.
As a head coach, do you like/want to be challenged by players/assistants? Many say they do yet get defensive & resentful. Do you really think you have ALL the answers & know EVERYTHING? Listen to your kids & coaches. You will probably learn more. Unless you already know it all.
When you see space, take advantage (shoot or attack). When you don’t see space, pass to someone in a more advantageous position. It’s not rocket science but it is your ego that makes you play stupid. Be adaptable & anti-fragile. Do Better. Be Better. Do Smart Hard.
Why make a kid do short, spot form shooting when they don’t shoot that way when active? Can even watch pros do form shooting and then shoot completely different in game. A center line shooter can’t do one handed form shooting from the center. Knowledge “about” vs “of”.
For 25+ yrs I’ve yet to have a player come to me that was truly a great & creative mover. Basically all robots as a result of their coaching & training environment. Very fragile “habits”. Not adaptable. Not creative. Waiting for me to TELL them the right solution. Do Better.
Provide a kid a better chance of succeeding through & after puberty by playing multiple sports. The better overall mover they are the more likely they will survive the massive physical changes of puberty that can wreck one sport kids. Create Healthier & Better Movers.
Want to actually learn and have it transfer to games more efficiently? Stop training on air. Use D! Players see to move and move to see. Problems constantly & instantly emerge. To become anti-fragile & adaptable, must use D as much as possible. @GAShotCoach
A major key to high efficiency scoring is body balance & control. The easiest way to maintain it is to jump vertically off 2 yet the best movers can maintain it even when leaning, fading, or twisting. Very few HS kids have the level of B&C needed to score efficiently. @GBACoach
To be able to score with a high level of efficiency, a player must have a high level of decision-making and a be a high level mover. Missing either and efficiency suffers tremendously. @GBACoach @GaBballAcademy
Do you really have the time to keep doing what you’ve been doing and getting the same inefficient results or minuscule gains?!! There ARE ways to train & work smarter to develop gains that are more efficient and learned & transferred quicker. No time to waste! @GBACoach
Why aren’t there more efficient scorers in HS? Kids are “getting up” tons of shots with and without “trainers” but with minimal gains each season if any. Is it the player or teacher? Most kids know and do only what they are told & taught. Do SMART Hard. @GBACoach
A player won’t see an opportunity/advantage if they don’t possess the movement solution needed. Ex: Inefficient 3pt shooter and they know it. Receive a pass wide open and don’t even consider the shot. May be good they don’t shoot but not good if never improve. @GAShotCoach
Had a player tell me they played 7 games in 2 days. Travel ball season is back and right along with it is ACL blowout season. “It was just a freak thing.” Nope. Absolutely no way to justify. @GAShotCoach @GaBballAcademy
I’m continuing to learn how to be comfortable with not knowing how to immediately “fix” or teach a player how to shoot efficiently. For yrs I thought it was crucial for every player to shoot close to the same way (“Like the pros”). Accepting every player moves differently…

Exploration over Instruction. A kid is going to learn more efficiently when I allow them time to explore to find solutions to a particular problem. I rob them of the opportunity to grow & learn when I immediately instruct on how I think a problem should be solved. @GBACoach
The more adaptable a kid is (ie Better Mover), the more stable they will be. Forcing kids to do the same exact rep every time cuz it’s supposed to be “game-like” makes them rigid and unstable. Build, expand, pump up and make their movement muscles stronger. @GAShotCoach

Many coaches do things they think is making their players “tough” when in reality it is breaking them down and hindering & weakening their mental & physical growth. Coaches, Do SMART Hard.
Try “grinding” as much on your nutrition, sleep, academics, mindset, relationships, respect, responsibility, accountability, etc as you claim you do on “skill” work & travel ball games. You’ll be a much better & happier player. @GAShotCoach
STOP WORSHIPPING THE GRIND. Worship doing & being smart. Doing what is required (which is usually a lot). Nothing wrong with doing hard unless you’re being stupid at the same time. Wasting time & risking injury is stupid just to say you’re “grinding.” Do SMART Hard.
As a head coach, do you like/want to be challenged by players/assistants? Many say they do yet get defensive & resentful. Do you really think you have ALL the answers & know EVERYTHING? Listen to your kids & coaches. You will probably learn more. Unless you already know it all.
When you see space, take advantage (shoot or attack). When you don’t see space, pass to someone in a more advantageous position. It’s not rocket science but it is your ego that makes you play stupid. Be adaptable & anti-fragile. Do Better. Be Better. Do Smart Hard.
Why make a kid do short, spot form shooting when they don’t shoot that way when active? Can even watch pros do form shooting and then shoot completely different in game. A center line shooter can’t do one handed form shooting from the center. Knowledge “about” vs “of”.
For 25+ yrs I’ve yet to have a player come to me that was truly a great & creative mover. Basically all robots as a result of their coaching & training environment. Very fragile “habits”. Not adaptable. Not creative. Waiting for me to TELL them the right solution. Do Better.
Provide a kid a better chance of succeeding through & after puberty by playing multiple sports. The better overall mover they are the more likely they will survive the massive physical changes of puberty that can wreck one sport kids. Create Healthier & Better Movers.
Want to actually learn and have it transfer to games more efficiently? Stop training on air. Use D! Players see to move and move to see. Problems constantly & instantly emerge. To become anti-fragile & adaptable, must use D as much as possible. @GAShotCoach
A major key to high efficiency scoring is body balance & control. The easiest way to maintain it is to jump vertically off 2 yet the best movers can maintain it even when leaning, fading, or twisting. Very few HS kids have the level of B&C needed to score efficiently. @GBACoach
To be able to score with a high level of efficiency, a player must have a high level of decision-making and a be a high level mover. Missing either and efficiency suffers tremendously. @GBACoach @GaBballAcademy
Do you really have the time to keep doing what you’ve been doing and getting the same inefficient results or minuscule gains?!! There ARE ways to train & work smarter to develop gains that are more efficient and learned & transferred quicker. No time to waste! @GBACoach
Why aren’t there more efficient scorers in HS? Kids are “getting up” tons of shots with and without “trainers” but with minimal gains each season if any. Is it the player or teacher? Most kids know and do only what they are told & taught. Do SMART Hard. @GBACoach
A player won’t see an opportunity/advantage if they don’t possess the movement solution needed. Ex: Inefficient 3pt shooter and they know it. Receive a pass wide open and don’t even consider the shot. May be good they don’t shoot but not good if never improve. @GAShotCoach

Had a player tell me they played 7 games in 2 days. Travel ball season is back and right along with it is ACL blowout season. “It was just a freak thing.” Nope. Absolutely no way to justify. @GAShotCoach @GaBballAcademy
I’m continuing to learn how to be comfortable with not knowing how to immediately “fix” or teach a player how to shoot efficiently. For yrs I thought it was crucial for every player to shoot close to the same way (“Like the pros”). Accepting every player moves differently…

Exploration over Instruction. A kid is going to learn more efficiently when I allow them time to explore to find solutions to a particular problem. I rob them of the opportunity to grow & learn when I immediately instruct on how I think a problem should be solved. @GBACoach
