It’s not a habit.
It is a conditioned response your nervous system now runs automatically.
@itsAkankxa Correct, and it's not passive either way. Screens keep the nervous system stimulated, so nothing actually downregulates. Real recovery needs a deliberate physiological signal, not just the absence of a screen.
The words we choose to use, spoken or internal, are far more powerful than we realize. The brain does not distinguish between sarcasm, wit, humor, or actual criticism, and it will stimulate the body to provide a biological response accordingly. The "script" you correctly refer to, choose which script you read carefully.

Your nervous system learned to react to the chime.
That reaction has a name, Telepressure.

That is Biometric Feedback Dysregulation.
The data was meant to serve you.
Now it is controlling you.
Every switch leaves attention residue.
Working memory stays partly loaded on the task you just left.
The residue accumulates all day.
It does not clear by itself.
That is the biological truth behind Context Switching and no ‘app’ will change that.
You were not born physically reacting to a notification.
It was built so gradually you didn’t even notice the change.
Now you experience a physical reaction autonomously.
A reaction before you even know what it signals.

@rajshamani "Checking your phone" has become a major challenge for a lot of high performers. The response to a simple notification has become conditioned through repetition, and they end up reaching for the phone on autopilot. Classical conditioning in action.
@SpartanPsyche The response to that "notification" is now a conditioned response for many, learned through years of repetition. That is where those "strong urges" you correctly name come from. The notification has become the bell to Pavlov's dog, with the nervous system response the salivation.
The plane doors close.
The signal drops.
Nothing can arrive, but instead of relief there is static.

People don't actually have to face that "stress and uncertainty" you correctly reference, they just have to perceive it to elicit the same biological response. Our nervous systems are not designed nor yet evolved to distinguish between real and perceived triggers, which results in many high performers walking around in a constant low level threat detection state.
@satti_humaira "Deal with it" is the hard part. Context Switching shows why: attention residue means part of your focus can stay loaded on the last task even after you've moved on. The brain needs a deliberate signal to actually close that loop, not just permission to.
@waronweakness The challenge here is that the "urge" as you correctly describe has become a conditioned response for many. It's no longer a choice, it's auto pilot. A conditioned response can be unlearnt but step 1 is to interrupt the response, simply moving the trigger moves the problem.
