Excellent study. The validity & reliability of measures are as important as intervention studies looking at efficacy. This area of research is often overlooked.

Most surrogate markers used as primary end points in clinical trials to support @US_FDA approval of drugs treating nononcologic chronic diseases lacked high-strength evidence of associations with clinical outcomes from published meta-analyses. ja.ma/4aIRFsR
Excellent and much needed changes from NIH! 👍
For ages, the cornerstone of medical therapy for people with heart attacks was beta blockers. The latest RCT showed long-term beta-blocker treatment did not lead to a lower risk of death compared to no beta blocker! Another win for RCT's. The power of a coin toss 🙏

Many of us do research 'on' the people; Some do it 'for' the people; Few are able to do research 'with' the people. Inspiring piece by Dr Abhay Bang explains the difference: idronline.org/putting-people…
Not an April fool joke.. a project that was undertaken to show pre-registration works by some of the most high-profile pre-registration advocates didn't have their own study pre-registered. The study was indeed positive!😜

Here is the actual poster of the now infamous time restricted study (TRE). TRE was associated with a 91% increase in CV deaths. But the absolute risk increase was just 3.9% . This simply means TRE was associated with just 4 more deaths over 8 years! 👊
Just saying that you could easily get a 100% increase in Relative Risk (RR) if you have just one more CV event in the intervention grp compared to the control. For ex, 2 in 100 in Intervention. 1 in 100 in control. Relative Risk = 2. Or a 100% increase. So be wary of RR. 😊

Exercise is an effective treatment for depression, with walking or jogging, yoga, and strength trng more effective than other exercises, particularly when intense! 🙏 Some of the benefits could be partly due to the social interaction effects of exercise which are not controlled

We are back with a journal club on Feb 7th! We will kick off with a discussion of @JamesSteeleII chapter 1 on philosophical concepts in sport and exercise science from the forthcoming STORK book. Available: doi.org/10.51224/SRXIV… Register: mcmaster.zoom.us/meeting/regist… All welcome!
After all this talk about data transparency, the "most-cited" clinical trials in 2019 or later that had industry involvement only 2.7% had data already readily available. From Ioannidis. 😵😵 jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…
The @DataColada team has been sued by Francesca Gino for exposing the fraudulent data underlying four of her papers (she claims defamation). The legal defense could get expensive. Please join us in providing financial support for their defense. gofundme.com/f/uhbka-suppor…
If you find the idea of strength training intimidating, Anoop Balachandran, Queens College professor of exercise science, has found "that there are different, feasible options" for anyone considering [weight] lifting. @GretchenReynold @washingtonpost ow.ly/rqci50PhGIP
Weight training can be easy and still build strength. Here’s how. washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/… Nice piece from @GretchenReynold @washingtonpost On our work bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/… and some nice work from @ExerciseBiology on lighter weights sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Muscle power: arguably our most critical physical capacity as we age. With aging, power declines faster than strength and is more closely associated with physical function and adverse outcomes. This meta-analysis found resistance training with fast velocities (or “power…
Does lighter-load resistance training “work” in middle-aged to older adults? New from @ExerciseBiology, @BradSchoenfeld, @ZackZenko et al. Resistance training performed w/ either “traditional” (8-12 reps/set) or lighter (20-24 reps/set) loads for 10 weeks (2 sessions/week): ↔️…
Our results again show lighter load training promotes similar increases in lean mass to heavier loads, this time in older adults. Heavy loads showed superior strength increases; lighter loads showed greater muscle endurance improvements 💪 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37236327/

Overly complex methods may impair pragmatic use of core evidence-based medicine principles #Editorial by Rebecca Kuehn, Ying Wang, @GuyattGH Highlight of the @ebhcconference 2023 Link: bit.ly/4aNWGzR
@theproof @GardnerPhD @PlantChompers @NutritionMadeS3 @bigfatsurprise @nicknorwitz @WardWriting Why not do a crossover trial with a washout?
@MichaelTamePain Oh mate... Use RStudio rather than working directly in an R Console.
Incredibly well written. @NIHFunding @NIH please consider this. Separating out physiological response vs clinical trials has led to so much wasted time and resources by physiology researchers as we are forced to fit the square peg in the round hole.
Exploratory physiological experiments are not clinical trials. Letter to the Editor at Cell Metabolism authors.elsevier.com/a/1i%7EWj5WXUl…
rest intervals per the @NSCA for developing hypertrophy. Is that stance based on a hormonal response paradigm? Anyway, somewhere between 60-90s maybe 'optimal' but thin evidence for benefit from my read. #hypertrophy #muscle #musclemass #musclegrowth #bodybuilding
Much ado is made about manipulating RT variables and their potential effects on outcomes—strength and hypertrophy. Nice work from @MiloWolf12 with @BradSchoenfeld sportrxiv.org/index.php/serv… on rest intervals. Small effects overall, but nothing to support short 1/
Our new flagship project: #MultiSCRIPT We made randomization routine care. We aim to randomize all persons with MS in our routine care in a series of nationwide pragmatic trials based on "real world data" - and almost all we invite participate! Thank you!!
#MultiSCRIPT major milestone with their 1st patient enrolled on February 5th, 2024 in Basel. Over 150 participants have been enrolled and randomized in less than 3 months. Congratulations to the study coordinators, nurses, and physicians at the #MS center in #Basel. @RC2NB

As always, yes provacative, but also incredibly thoughtful and well-written from Vinay It does however miss perhaps the most important value of a whole body MRI to those who want one… NOT finding early disease, but the reassurance of seeing none

A crucial point raised by @GuyattGH We @magicevidence have clearly adopted a pragmatic approach and focus of core principles for the implementation of evidence based care.
New editorial exposes big problems with the clin epi/EBM methods community losing our bearings in balancing simplicity vs methods sophistication. Excessive complexity includes Cochrane RoB 2, ROBINS-I, and GRADE methods. Solutions are on the way! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38453419/
@eimeardol @grantabt @GregLJMU @TenanATC @PaulSwinton9 I'd try to reflect on why I'd done the study in the first place... Was there a point to the explorations, or was it actually supposed to be confirmatory if you really reflect on it. Of course most "confirmatory" research in our field is intended to be but falls short of severity.
@ExerciseBiology @foundmyfitness Most likely petri dish or mouse model.
Super important point. Most ideas in biomedicine don't actually work. Most plausible things don't help. Our pretest probability should be low.
