All MH professionals should read this, and have a strong word with themselves as soon as they start to feel defensive. This is real, this is happening to some degree in every service, and we turn a blind eye because a discharge or 'gatekeeping' is supposedly a success

@DrChloeBeale Agreed - a beautiful quote from the article - "Through my medical notes, a paper version of myself was sculpted using the thoughts and words of mental health professionals, and it was this version of me which was assessed and treated"
@DrChloeBeale I self discharged in the middle of a crisis and I’m a service avoider. I refuse to go anywhere near them. If they can’t help me when I have the off crisis when will they help.
@DrChloeBeale My family member says this is a great description...
@DrChloeBeale It’s time for action. We know what’s wrong it’s time to start fixing it.
@DrChloeBeale I pay privately for mental illness care because what was available in my area was so dire. The advice to go private was from my NHS GP so that says everything.
@DrChloeBeale Service avoider here too and i wouldn't recommend anyone contacting NHS MH services in case they would make it worse.
@DrChloeBeale I have read this post and I am going through exactly the same as a detained patient at The Spinney in Manchester. The system is well and truly broken.
@DrChloeBeale I am a service avoider. My opinion of any person I have been involved with in MH services is a regard for patients that I can only describe as dehumanising. Even staff who would regard themselves as caring still have this opinion that whatever they do or say is for my own good.1
@DrChloeBeale 2. I find this very difficult to explain. An example of this is something I witnessed with another patient. In a group setting this patient said previously as an inpatient he was given meds accidentally that could have been dangerous. He complained but no one listened.
