With this video, I’m launching a national health movement against false marketing in packaged food! This time I’m not alone. Many influencers, celebrities, doctors and sports stars have UNITED to fight against false marketing! Every week we hear of a new food issue affecting the country! Infant milk sugar, children’s health drinks, Indian chips having palm oil and the masala-cancer issue are just a few of them. If the majority of Indians started reading labels, companies would be forced to stop false marketing and give us better quality food! In the early 20th century, infant mortality was high in Canada and malnutrition was a leading cause for infant deaths. To deal with this problem, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto began working on a new product...Pablum. This is its story. In 1918, the Nutritional Research Laboratories at the hospital opened under Dr. Alan Brown. He recruited Dr. Fred Tisdall and Dr. Theodore Drake to his nutritional research team. Through the 1920s, breastfeeding had declined among the upper and middle class. Some mothers made a porridge-like meal for their babies, which unfortunately caused digestive problems. In 1930, with Dr. Tisdall serving as director, the NRL created a biscuit for children. It was introduced to the public as McCormick's Sunwheat Biscuits. The biscuits were manufactured by the McCormick Manufacturing Company. The biscuits were good for children but not for infants. Dr. Tisdall and Dr. Drake began working to develop a cereal that had minerals, protein and vitamins. Their goal was to retain whole grains without causing digestive problems. Using dehydrated milk, the mixture was cooked in huge pressurized steam kettles, dried on a rotating drum and then scraped off. This created a cereal that was dry and flaky with the desired nutrients. Mothers could mix the cereal, which could be kept indefinitely, with milk or water. The name Pablum came from pabulum, which is Latin for food, or foodstuffs. Others involved in the development of Pablum included Pearl Summerfeldt, Alan Brown, Ruth Herbert and Harry H. Engel. The patent was under Dr. Tisdall's name. Due to the high amount of Vitamin D in Pablum, the food helped prevent rickets in children. The Hospital for Sick Children was given a royalty for every container of Pablum sold. By 1978, Pablum had earned the hospital $7 million in royalties. In 1951, four new formulas of Pablum were made available to fight the claims the food was bland. Following creating Pablum, Dr. Tisdall was involved in experiments on Indigenous children in the 1940s. These experiments malnourished Indigenous children who were already starving, to study the nutritional implications of fortified foods. Dental care was also not provided to the children because researchers wanted to observe the state of dental caries and gingivitis with malnutrition. Dr. Tisdall died in 1949. Dr. Drake went on to design nutritional diets for the RCAF during the Second World War. He died in 1959. The Pablum brand was sold to Mead Johnson in 1995. By the early 21st-century, Pablum had ceased to be used commercially. And yet, the stickiest memory of his career is the feeling of uncertainty. Rarer than talent or work ethic, the poet John Keats wrote, is the ability to step into and push through doubts and uncertainties. In 1817, Keats wrote a letter to his brothers to share this exciting realization. “At once it struck me,” Keats wrote, “what quality went to form a Man of Achievement … Negative Capability.” Keats explains that “Negative Capability” is “when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.” Takeaway 2: Those who possess Negative Capability, who can sit with uncertainty, who can spend months or years in the minefield that is working on something while knowing that there is a real possibility no one will care about it—they often possess another quality. They do what they do, not as a means to some end (money, fame, awards, etc.), but for the sake of doing it. When asked about one of his movies that commercially failed, Hanks said, "I loved making that movie. I loved writing it, I loved being with it. I love all the people in it." As Ryan Holiday once told me, "The work has to be the win." You control the effort, he says, not the results. "So ultimately, you have to love doing it. Kyle here - we wanted to share this (Dianna writes me notes when talking is too hard). When she says she "cant do something" it means there's often an energy or symptom cost to trying. For the last 5 months, tiny amounts of activity trigger awful symptoms. #longcovid #MECFS
