Fantastic article. There is a gaping whole of research on this exact topic. The story of America's internal cultural diversity has not sufficiently been told.
Americans have a natural tendency to think of our country as unitary, with states as mere administrative boundaries. But the ethnic and cultural differences within the USA are staggering, greater than between many European countries. New article by @whatifalthist (link below):
