Marko argues that the "America vs. Europe" debate is a way for Americans to manufacture a new consensus that America is already economically great and therefore incumbent political and economic institutions do not need reform. It is a method of recuperating a defeated populism.
"Many Europeans, my wife included, will gripe incessantly about the alleged lack of public safety and order in Europe. Suffice it to say, she has not mentioned it a single time since visiting San Francisco—on paper, one of the richest cities in the richest country in the world."
Leisure time is one of the most obviously desirable forms of wealth. Adjusting for hours worked, the numbers end up much more favorable to Europe, especially the powerhouses of Germany and France, not to mention 52 million Europeans in "small unrepresentative rich states."
America and Europe are equally poor. Higher wage and GDP figures for the U.S. are overblown and fail to capture America's dwindling public wealth. Europe is now on a trajectory to get poorer, but isn't there yet. Read the new article by @mmjukic here: palladiummag.com/2024/04/26/ame…
Interesting piece. I’d argue America is “defense rich” in a way Europe is not. But beyond that, spot on.

A friend points out I forgot to add that—as measures of well-being and quality of life—fertility rates between the U.S. and Europe have converged, while U.S. life expectancy is lower and suddenly collapsing.

No one ever talks about Portuguese Dynamism or say confidently that Portugal is unfathomably richer than South Korea. Yet, these are the same kind of figures used when championing the US over the EU.

All things considered, America and Europe are roughly equally as poor and backwards overall. Neither lives up to the hype, let alone the future they ought to be building. Check out my new article in @palladiummag! (Adapted from last week's highly popular/controversial thread.)

@RokoMijic You now understand @SamoBurja's Great Founder Theory.
On the other hand maybe we should all be saying that East Asia is unfathomably poorer than Europe. It would be a fun discourse to indulge even if not true.
No one ever talks about Portuguese Dynamism or say confidently that Portugal is unfathomably richer than South Korea. Yet, these are the same kind of figures used when championing the US over the EU.
"Then again, the same numbers say that Japan is poorer than Lithuania and that South Korea is poorer than Portugal." Statistics are just a starting point for measuring reality, not the finish line. We still need a principled model of reality, and interaction with reality too!
A friend points out I forgot to add that—as measures of well-being and quality of life—fertility rates between the U.S. and Europe have converged, while U.S. life expectancy is lower and suddenly collapsing.
Marko argues that crime and disorder in the U.S. are the most obvious way that America's public wealth is negated. It isn't wealth if you risk injury or death! Violent crime is a national phenomenon in America, but most of Europe, big cities too, is still "as safe as Dubai."
The problem with both is the same: poor and dwindling human capital

@palladiummag @mmjukic What a load of complete and utter nonsense. Stop publishing such bilge.
All things considered, America and Europe are roughly equally as poor and backwards overall. Neither lives up to the hype, let alone the future they ought to be building. Check out my new article in @palladiummag! (Adapted from last week's highly popular/controversial thread.)

This is a true story.
"Many Europeans, my wife included, will gripe incessantly about the alleged lack of public safety and order in Europe. Suffice it to say, she has not mentioned it a single time since visiting San Francisco—on paper, one of the richest cities in the richest country in the world."

In the end, neither America nor Europe are significantly ahead of each other, nor building the wealthy future they should be building. "Rather than justifying the status quo, we should ask ourselves what things no amount of money could buy even in the developed world today."
Marko argues that crime and disorder in the U.S. are the most obvious way that America's public wealth is negated. It isn't wealth if you risk injury or death! Violent crime is a national phenomenon in America, but most of Europe, big cities too, is still "as safe as Dubai."
Other numbers clash with our assumptions in interesting ways: Britain and Italy are roughly equal. Eastern Europe used to actually be unfathomably poorer than the U.S., but is now half as rich. The median American is as wealthy as the median Spaniard or Italian!
Leisure time is one of the most obviously desirable forms of wealth. Adjusting for hours worked, the numbers end up much more favorable to Europe, especially the powerhouses of Germany and France, not to mention 52 million Europeans in "small unrepresentative rich states."
Since wealth is categorically different from money, we can recognize that one can derive value from wealth without being its owner, and that public wealth exists. Comparing continents of hundreds of millions, getting value from wealth is the more important facet of wealthiness.
Marko argues that we need to distinguish between money, wealth, and value. To be wealthy, it is not enough to have money, but also to be able to make that money go somewhere. Traditionally, "somewhere" meant things ranging from fine spices to beautiful wives to vast estates.
"Then again, the same numbers say that Japan is poorer than Lithuania and that South Korea is poorer than Portugal." Statistics are just a starting point for measuring reality, not the finish line. We still need a principled model of reality, and interaction with reality too!
Most numbers purporting to now show a devastating U.S. economic lead over Europe are just misleading. For example, though Europe's nominal GDP has fallen to 2/3 of the U.S.' since 2008, it was also at 2/3 in 2000. These aren't real changes, just exchange rate fluctuations.
