Reasons why autistic people can make excellent parents, despite what stereotypes say - a thread. Please read and share.
We're now 2 yrs into the decisive decade. Emissions should be in an unprecedented fall, instead we're seeing the 2nd biggest rise ever recorded. We're wasting invaluable time pretending we can solve this crisis without treating it like a crisis. World leaders are still in denial.
Parenting with a disability strikes again. I took my kid to a Christmas thing today. A staff member pulled us aside and asked my daughter “where is your grown up in charge of you?” I awkwardly said I’m her mum. She looked me up and down and said “oh, poor thing” 🙃🙃
With mask-wearing being made compulsory again, I would like to remind those are not disabled that the sunflower lanyard scheme was created to show a person has a hidden disability. It was not created as a way for you to avoid wearing a mask.
There's this massive stereotype that autistic people are ardent and unquestioning rule followers, but in my experience we are far more likely to question and criticise those rules, and why they are the way they are, than to just blithely follow them.
I am genuinely begging anti-maskers not to use sunflower lanyards again. Support in public places for those of us who’s disabilities are less obvious when wearing them has only just returned. Hold your “belief” with your chest and wear nothing, don’t take our support.
Y'all hate autistic people who don't communicate things "properly" and who heavily misunderstand ideas. Who's autism makes it hard to understand situations and say things that might be considered bad.
This is important, and not something I had ever thought of, before.
I'm nervous to share this. But w/talk of 2021 accomplishments I want to also be honest about disappointments. In early 2021 I was offered 2 fellowships totaling $45k. They would have been game-changing for me & my career. They fell thru when I asked for disability accommodations.

When people say shit like “I don’t want to be a wheelchair user” / “I’d rather be dead than not walk” / “My life would be so much harder” … what you’re really picking up on is ABLEISM. Life shouldn’t change all that drastically just because you’re sitting instead of standing.
If you think #COP26 is the grandest climate conference, you need to think twice. This is most chaotic, exclusive and inaccessible event ever! How come that high-level meetings, plenaries and negotiations are ticketed spaces and access are limited? Bullshit. 🤬 1/n
Imagine that you're trapped in someone else's body witnessing their own movements & words all the time, even when you think about what you want to say, someone else's thoughts and words come out. This is why being autistic is so isolating. NTs see what they want to see. 1/15

With trans people being left out of conversion therapy bans, people need to be aware of a new conversion therapy called "gender exploratory therapy," which "explores" reasons for dysphoria until they find one that convinces a trans person to no longer be trans.
After years of delay in which LGBTQ+ people in the UK have continued to suffer as a consequence of conversion practices, it's devastating to hear that the UK government is again breaking its promise to our communities, walking away from its commitment to end conversion therapy.
They want £260 for an open return York to London, nearly 50 days in advance,to accept this as normal, this country has lost its mind
Just in case you haven't heard this recently, Autistic people: You are not selfish.
'Activism' in the 21st century is seeing some folks receive notorioty, awards and sponsorships for posing with placards and posting on social media, whilst your friends are being brutalised and imprisoned by the state on the daily. It's a bizarre world we're living in.
Folks it's happening, I'm getting a passport with my new name! I managed to navigate this system (which really was harder than it had any need to be). I just want to say thanks to everyone who has given me love and support along the way!

12. We are, after all, just people with a different way of processing the world, so why on earth should we be bad at parenting? Exactly. It's just prejudice and stereotypes.
