RE this dumbass marketing thing. Yes, we don’t have a credited marketer. I know it’s weird. We paid A LOT of money to trial the industry’s best agencies for this shit and they came up with nothing good. We learned some genuinely meaningful, replicable things from it.

This is a GREAT mechanic to build upon for juiciness. Why? Well, imagine little cosmetic effects, like having some weapons make the character use the weapon itself as part of the melee barrage. This wouldn't be said anywhere, and the player would find it out by testing.

If it isn’t immediately obvious, I am very passionate about games and that’s why I take the responsibility of being brutally honest very seriously. It takes a lot of honesty, and a lot of zeal to make this stuff work.
Very happy to be proven wrong but then Google Stadia announced itself with BG3, and despite being the largest advertising economy in the world (?) quietly shat itself into oblivion. You’d think they’d have AlL ThE DaTa.
This is why - as clampdowns on trackers increase, social media use falls under scrutiny, and players become increasingly suspicious of (and distant from!) traditional actors, I suggest that “‘marketing is dead” and the true MVP is communication and product focus. This cannot be…
And then the job becomes maintenance. Sustenance. A conversation in a societal sense is a resonant globule that expands over time. It needs fuel. That fuel is not advertisements but rather conversational interjections. Like being in the middle of a dinner table. You are the host.
Every projection you’re presented with is false. I call these magic 8 balls. The only security you will ever find is in the players. If you are literally overwhelmed by the conversation and the conversation is positively tracked, you may be onto something.
Once you assume the “product” (I do not use this term) is good you have to understand you’re a liability. If it’s not good, it’ll have problems. If it is good, you could make it flop, or optimistically, there’s degrees of success. There are no trad methods that earn security.
10) Don’t look back. Look forward. Focus on what works for you, and what isn’t working for you, and tune your message until it is. Things are going to get harder but there’s a lot of opportunity for earnest expressions for direct audiences that currently exist. Of that I am sure.
9) Most important: it has never been easier to *potentially* reach your audience directly. Less so outside of PC, but that’s the sphere where innovations happen. Express authentically and understand the tools you have to reach those players. Figure out that conversation.
8) Figure out how to execute your expression. Sometimes a live cow is the correct expression. Sometimes raw gameplay is the right expression. You’re looking for a meaningful connection and the best way to do that is to express the best you can for the moment, but execute well.
7) Impressions don’t mean anything to you. They’re a bogus economy that serve only to fund a quite literal false economy. It distances yourself from your target audience. Focus on tangible expressions, organic reactions, etc. your CM is your most valuable asset.
6) KPIs are a plague. Had a conversation about this with a MKT director recently. Don’t speak just to fill a quota. Make sure you’re saying something that resonates. If you have nothing to say, it’s ok to be quiet until you do.
5) don’t bamboozle. To establish true social resonance you need a 50/50 relationship with an audience. They respect you, you respect them (this is where trad marketing is at odds and where communications supersedes). Speak your truth and let them speak theirs.
4) The best way to connect with someone in a meaningful way is to speak their language in a way that makes them feel engaged. What do they want? Do you have it? Do you understand them? Exhibit it in a way that’s authentic for you.
3) Control spend. We’re entering a product-focused era. Your grandma is on Facebook but you’re actively engaged with your hobby (gaming). Assume people are seeking out their niche. Find them. Talk to them.
