張維迎教授曾經擔任北京大學光華管理學院副院長、院長11年，2014年7月，任北京大學國家發展研究院教授。 這是2017年7月1日，張維迎在北京大學國家發展研究院2017屆畢業典禮中，作為教師代表發言。他回顧了中國和世界的科技進步史，指出要實現創新，必須創造自由的環境；只有自由，才能使中國人的企業家精神和創造力得到發揮，才能讓中國變成創新的國家。他強調，自由是一個不可分割的整體，當靈魂不自由的時候，行動不可能自由；當言論不自由的時候，思想不可能自由，只有自由，才有創造。張維迎指出，推動和捍衛自由是大家的責任，是每個北大人的使命。他希望畢業生們捍衛自由，成為真正的北大人。 現在的北大還允許教授這樣教導學生嗎？
