A lot of the problems in the games industry lead back to DEI. Beginning in the 2010s, there was huge pressure on studios to hit equity targets for racial minorities in staffing and especially to increase the percentage of women. This had two very devastating effects: First, in order to hit those goals during an era when publishers were flush and the industry was growing, they just made up a lot of jobs. Lots of marketing and project management and various non-creative and non-technical roles that didn’t directly touch the product, but largely exist to be filled by women and minorities. In a more challenging economic environment, there are a lot of jobs at these studios that simply cannot be justified, and that is why a third of the games industry has been laid off in the last couple of years. The other problem is when you are selecting for race, gender, sexual orientation and other checkboxes, you’re not selecting for merit. 20 years ago, visionary creatives surrounded themselves with people who shared their values and aspirations and they hired the people they believed could best realize their vision, without regard for anything else. A lot of these big studios today have lots of regard for other qualities in staff, but no unifying vision, and social justice values have replaced the relentless pursuit of excellence. When you look at entire publishers like Ubisoft that haven’t made a great game in decades, you have to understand that the quality of their output is an indictment of everything they do, everything they are and everything they believe in. And the games are going to fail until the people and the process that produces them changes.

Affluent Americans refusing to live within their abundant means seems somehow consistent with most adult Americans being overweight and millions of college graduates demanding cancellation of their student loan debt. All point to a lack of personal discipline and self-restraint.

If you look at the average home price at 420-450k this means 130-150k of that home cost is driven by Illegals. That's a life changing amount to most Americans. For years I was called crazy when I said this was happening and yet here we are. A third of all price increases.

This has come up a few times and actually what’s most interesting about it is that it’s an example of a kind of argument that’s widely known and shared by the new online right that I think most people on the left are completely unaware of. This idea in particular is the subject of various memes that pop-up in my mentions all the time. This actually dovetails nicely with what I said in the original tweet that set all this off about how there are no intellectuals on the left with respect to this stuff. There are now entire categories of arguments that the new online right takes as conventional wisdom, shares around and discusses, that even fairly informed and educated liberals are totally unfamiliar with. They’ve never heard these arguments. They’ve never engaged with them. Gee, I wonder why. Screenshots unrelated.

Nope. @xwanyex is absolutely correct. There’s no reason to assume that beliefs we hold today are forever settled. There doesn’t even need to be a plausible argument at the moment; really all you need is enough people saying they don’t want it. You should always be aware of the potential need to defend your beliefs because the only reason not to is that you believe you can silence speech.

wanye is ofc totally capable of speaking for himself but the hate for him is familiar to me and i might shed some light on its nature i dont know him personally but i have the impression that he like many others on this site are roughly like me in the following way: we are americans were straightforwardly and unreflectively liberal, in the old sense, in our youth, and we have grown into early fatherhood watching the national political and intellectual frameworks around which we built our world being shredded by hostile actors and events. these things that we took for granted are no longer with us or at least under great duress, and values and institutions that we never wanted to question have been despoiled and exploited. in an age of anomie we interrogate inherited sacredness to understand its nature, that we might better preserve what seems still worthy in this new world to the extent possible. this matter is specifically pressing, i imagine, to fathers who are struggling to conceive of what mores and world-stories they might offer their children as they approach the age of reason. asking critical questions of sacred matters is necessarily offensive to (1) people who cynically benefit from their ongoing inviolable standing, and (2) to others who more benignly do not regard them as under threat. here, @JamesSurowiecki plays euthyphro to @xwanyex's socrates.
