So much for today's Riverfly sampling session on the River Red. This is the plight of our #chalkstreams in 2021; another incident chipping away at the river's health. The insects at the bottom of the food chain need clean water all year, not just gaps between pollution events.

My current favourite false dilemma is the one being propagated by the water sector: We either dump untreated sewage into the river or you can having it backing up and flooding into your homes. Is anyone buying that argument? Great @BBCPanorama this eve @joe_crowley

3 weeks since we asked @AnglianWater for details of all the 88 occasions when Haslingfield sewage works overflowed in 2019 (ideally we want other years too) so we can see if we can correlate with rainfall, and hence warn swimmers when there's a risk. No response yet....
Here is the data from @AnglianWater for the Cam VALLEY. Haslingfield, the biggest polluter, spilled for fewer hours than in 2019, but Arrington and Melbourn far worse. A grand total of 628.58 hours of 💩.
@camvalleyforum @AnglianWater We have a similar situation on the Lark in Suffolk. BTW Haslingfield had 49 releases for a total of 428.25 hours in 2020 (EA released that data last week)
