Ppl like “if you can’t afford a house in your city why don’t you move to a small town in a state you’ve never been to 100s of miles away from all your friends and family with no childcare options or anywhere to walk to and do your remote job alone in your affordable home office?”
@clhubes My biggest gripe when then they say this is that people are ALREADY doing this and it's pricing out those small towners who've been there are their lives. Accept THEY don't have the luxury to move cross country with a nonexistent remote job with good salary.
@twig_lalaland @clhubes Exactly what’s happened in my town. Even when housing was creeping up it was still affordable for most. Now everything starts at $300k minimum unless it’s a 100 year old house, then you might see $150k, but it likely needs $60k or more put into it.
@twig_lalaland @clhubes They just built some townhomes starting at $350k by the lake (no access w/o driving or walking) and they sold immediately. Across the street is trailers and run down older homes. Add in the lake is controlled by TVA and you can really only have a decent view 1/2 the year.
This is so underrated. I already live in an expensive area (Oakland isn't cheap, despite what folks try to assert about the city), and when people got priced out of SF about ~10 years ago, and moved here, they also got rid of the bulk of the community. So, not only are the residents displaced, but all the good local spots we frequented are gone. The R&B/soul lounge is replaced with a rock bar with indoor bocce ball courts. Like... where am I?
@twig_lalaland @clhubes Yes, this is the real important point.
@twig_lalaland @clhubes This is an political/economic issue. When purchasing they have stats that prove you’re local or not & that should not affect locals costs of living imo. The law is criminal
@twig_lalaland @clhubes THIS. My hometown went from 800 ppl to 1k ppl in ten years.
