My grandfather built motors that powered big machines. In a lab not so different from his workshop, my colleagues and I uncovered the assembly of the bacterial motor. Today, this discovery has been published in @NatureMicrobiol #MolecularNodes #Discovery nature.com/articles/s4156…
is there a limit to how small of a peptide you can specifically target to an organelle? for instance if you have a 10 aa peptide with a 30 aa mitochondrial targeting sequence, will it be successfully imported and cleaved so you end up with the 10 aa at the end?

I found another funny example - there's a long copy-paste section (with no citation) from what appears to be an online physics tutorial associated with the University of Cambridge doitpoms.ac.uk/tlplib/beam_be…

why do babies drool so much? i was under the impression the main function of saliva is to break down complex carbohydrates, but the carbs in breast milk are almost entirely lactose

@strandbergbio @genomerambler "I possess every good quality, but the one that distinguishes me above all is modesty." (from Charles Richet's The Natural History of a Savant)
returning to this question: the cases i've seen so far are not truly independent but are rather "confirmations" of an initial erroneous report i wonder if genuinely independent erroneous "discoveries" have ever been made? or is the scientific method so robust against them?
we normally take multiple independent discoveries as a strong evidence for veracity of the findings in question. what are the cases where several scientists independently arrived at the same *erroneous* conclusion?
the optimal amount of overconfidence is not zero
@patrickc People mock the overconfidence of startup founders, but there's a reason for it. Only people who are naturally somewhat overconfident will take on problems that, when viewed rationally, would seem too hard.
As a parent you know, of course, that your kid is the Ship of Theseus. But there are moments when that feels like more than an academic point and those moments are always a little sad.
"wanting is better than having" skill issue
Looking back at it, they may have been right. We all wish criticism was always constructive. But it isn’t. Learning to profit from *destructive* criticism is the real superpower.
In one of my first talks as a PI, I was badgered the entire time (by senior and junior faculty alike). Afterwards in a 1-1, a senior faculty continued to berate me, asking “do you even know any of the literature?!” I asked where the bathroom was and never came back.
As part of an otherwise mostly mediocre session on academic writing that I was required to attend during my PhD-attempt (I subsequently taught a better one) one of thing they said was "English doesn't actually have synonyms" and I think about that a lot.
Thank you Adam! Great. We’ll read it. Who wants to put on a performance of “John” here?
@RingoHosp John by Annie Baker amazon.com/John-TCG-Annie…
@genomerambler Simple solution there: we’ll just make high fidelity sims of the phenomena we don’t understand so that we can research them on the computer, leading to more understanding.
Here’s the much-requested 3D printed bacterial motor from our study. My 3-year-old thinks it’s a tiara, while some think it’s a lamp shade! I have made the 3D print file available here: 3d.nih.gov/entries/3DPX-0… @NIH3D #Science #STEAM #OpenAccess #3Dprint nature.com/articles/s4156…

I cannot imagine not doing it like that.
Apparently a thing some people routinely do is make a bunch of slides and then just roughly remember what they were going to say in response to each slide without speaker notes, I cannot imagine being able to do that.
