I imagine there's some comfort in imagining a future without racism and projecting that onto the present. Thinking if we just deny the truth, it doesn't exist. If history is erased, we don't have to deal with its consequences. However...
@johnlegend You have a platform John, but you are willfully promoting hate against law enforcement when you of all people could be building a bridge between all groups involved. Cops have families too.
@horvat2boeser @johnlegend Respectfully, I don’t think it’s John’s job to do this. I think law enforcement needs to repair itself and its relationship with communities of color. There are simply too many examples now for the ‘one bad apple’ argument to stand. 1/
@horvat2boeser @johnlegend If the Canadian police can restrain themselves from shooting an actual terrorist, then American police can be retrained to stop shooting innocent black kids.
@smartkaleck @horvat2boeser @johnlegend That police officer was stupid. If that man had a gun and put one between his eyes and went on to kill another 10 people nobody would be celebrating that cop's restraint. That was a real possibility when he jerked an object up and pointed it at the cop like it was a gun
@smartkaleck @horvat2boeser @johnlegend Thank you for recognizing this courage and clarity of mind of our officer in Toronto. That being said, we all have work to do around oppression and systemic racism.
@smartkaleck @horvat2boeser @johnlegend That was one cop. Canadian police have tragically high kill rates, especially of people of colour.
@smartkaleck @horvat2boeser @johnlegend Exercising restraint is probably a lot easier when you aren't being targeted yourself nearly as often, though. Over its *145-year* history, the RCMP has lost 78 officers to shootings. In comparison, 70 U.S. cops were shot & killed in just the last *year-and-a-half*.
@smartkaleck @horvat2boeser @johnlegend This is about WAY more than police ‘training’ Karen; this policeman’s actions evince a cultural chasm between 🇨🇦 & 🇺🇸 — we EXPECT our police to act honourably, with equal parts restraint & resolve, and compassionately. Above all, we believe in the judicial process and courts.
