Parallel suburbs beneath our feet. N. rats + soil = build rows of houses w/pantries, front & back doors, neighborhood streets to main highways to shopping (foraging) centers for food, water & nesting supplies. Us and them: daily resources-dependent survival habits. 🏘️🛣️🛒🥩

House mice in mouse houses. Me find 4 aptbuildings here. Mice LOVE cardbd boxes 4 big nesting. We shove boxes out-of-sight /out-of-mind dark areas & furgetaboutem. Boxes keep family odors. 2x walls + junk inside protect fm cold+ lower disturbing noises (low stress=more mice).🐭🐭

Garbage cans (esp rental apt. builds): Supers think: "Why spend 💵 4 metal cans + lids for just smelly garbage?" So cheap plastic garb cans (CPGCs) get used. In rat cities, CPGCs = FAST rat-chew-thrus = FAST rats Nos. 10X. Poison baits NEVER offset this. Buy strong cans!😬😬🐀

Street homeless (thousands ++ nyc; millions worldwide). Piling on: street rats attack sleeping homeless nightly : biting faces, hands, feet & transmit diseases (leptospirosis, rat-bite fever, others) worsening current dire health conditions. Sadness on sadness. 😔🐀🏥

Construction "causing" local rat explosions = a generalization & over-simplification of bigger dynamic. Mostly a street-by-street thing. Nevertheless, certain sub-street zones in old cities/sewers =v. rat prone: digging in those be similar to disturbing a hornet's nest. 🐀🐝🐝

Me about : Amazing wild city just inches below 1000's daily busy feet. Active yrs old rat midden w / lairs (2) secreted & re-secreted in spandrel of commuter stairwell. Rat emergence & foraging begins/ceases/w nightly cycle of human pidder-padder. Gamy odor was mind blowing.🐀🤓

Saturday walky=Cityrat’s “digs”. Let’s drop by (unannounced 🫢). Most = 3 burrow holes: 1) main door (fresh soil kicked out); 2/3 rear & side doors for escaping danger (e.g., snakes,killer rats, water washouts++). Often pantry dug below for storing foods (v.cold/wet times).🚪🐀🏘️

Often peeps tell me "The 'night rats' around here appear & disappear on our sidewalks from 'nowhere'--it's wild!" Yup. Note rat 'disappears' in 4 secs. down sidewalk crack no pedestrian ever sees--Poof! But Mr. Terrier straining against your leash 'sees' at every walking. 🦮🐀🪄
