I think there's a typo! Let me fix it. The essential thing about the Great Books is that many of them take place before the conditions of modernity: industrialization, modern media, mass scale cities and institutions, the therapeutic/managerial state, and modern technology.

I think academics made a mistake labeling the modern university administrative structure a “business model”. It is a bureaucratic and technocratic model. And a big part of what is wrong with it is (as this whole thread points out) that it’s bad — very bad — for business.

A big elephant in the room. It’s not even that students don’t read, it’s that they have been normalized to not sit with a text for more than a few minutes at a time. And the OER push only encourages small bite reading.

I think to teach the books I teach, I need to have thought about them a long time and on my own terms. I think for students to study the books I teach is very useful, but the uses are basically impossible to predict...
