The summer firefly show is over or ending in most of the eastern US right now. Everything you do to your lawn between now and next spring decides what you'll see next July. Almost every firefly that flashed this summer mated and laid eggs in your soil and leaf litter. Those eggs have hatched into larvae that will spend the next one to two years underground, hunting slugs and soft-bodied pests in the dark. The generation underground right now is next summer's light show. Grub treatments applied in August, or any time of year, kill firefly larvae that can't get out of the way. The pesticide doesn't know the difference between a Japanese beetle grub and a firefly larva. Firefly populations take years to recover. Insecticides do the same thing at larger scale. A single application can eliminate the firefly larvae across an entire treated area. Raking and bagging all your leaf litter in fall removes the overwintering habitat firefly larvae depend on. They burrow into loose leaf litter to survive winter. A bare, tidy lawn in November is a hostile environment for the larvae underneath it. The action items are mostly subtractions. Skip the grub treatment this fall. Leave the leaf litter. Turn the porch light off when you go to bed. What you do in August and September is really a decision about what you see next June. Treat the lawn accordingly.

For anyone who likes their food thoroughly doused, the EPA approved three new ones on 1 July 2026, and there are four more in the queue. The three are epyrifenacil, diflufenican and trifludimoxazin. Two of them had never been used in the United States before. All three are now cleared for corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, citrus and peanuts, which is over 70 million hectares of farmland and very nearly the entire foundation of the plant-based aisle, signed off in a single afternoon. The agency's own review of trifludimoxazin recorded suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential. It approved it anyway. Two of the three break down into trifluoroacetic acid, currently among the most widespread and least removable contaminants in the world's water supply. The EPA's technical work found that trifludimoxazin degrades into twelve separate PFAS compounds, which is generous. Most products manage only the one. The official position is that none of these are forever chemicals, because the definition the agency itself wrote in 2023 requires a molecule to carry two or more fully fluorinated carbons. All three carry precisely one. The chemistry is identical, the persistence is identical, and the paperwork is immaculate. Fifth approval of its kind under the current administration, against one in the whole of the previous four years. It landed a fortnight before the comment deadline on relaxing drinking water limits for other PFAS compounds, which is either very poor scheduling or very good scheduling. No press release. Posted quietly in the Federal Register on a Tuesday, the way you announce a car park closure.

They smashed babies against trees and murdered nearly 2 million Cambodians in under 4 years chasing a pure agrarian communist utopia with no cities, no money, and no private property. There have been 31 F/EF3+ tornadoes in Wisconsin during the months of July–December since 1950. 20 of those were recorded before 1990. Trace CO₂ clearly is not the tornado control knob. The only alarm bell here is your ignorance.

Tornadoes shouldn't be happening at the end of July. The South is traditionally the only place with a 2nd tornado season (coinciding with the Fall hurricane season). This is one among a litany of alarm bells regarding climate change.

Seventy three years later, at the age of 93, he flew nearly 10,000 miles to Japan and placed the flag into the hands of Sadao's younger brother. Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for noticing that cancer is greedy. Specifically, that a tumour burns through sugar at a rate healthy tissue never touches. It was an odd little observation about metabolism, and for decades it mostly sat in textbooks. Then somebody built a machine on it. Inject a patient with radioactive glucose, wait, and photograph the body. The cancer inhales the sugar and lights up on the scan like a flare, bright against the dark of everything behaving normally. That is a PET scan, it is in every major hospital, and it is reliable precisely because a tumour will always outbid you for sugar and always win. So the disease has one confirmed, Nobel-winning, billion-pound-industry weakness: it runs on sugar and cannot help itself. Which is roughly the moment the lunch trolley arrives. White toast. Tinned peaches in syrup. A carton of juice, a biscuit, and a friendly leaflet recommending plenty of good wholesome carbohydrate to keep your strength up. Upstairs, a scanner worth millions is exploiting the tumour's sweet tooth to hunt it down. Downstairs, catering is seeing to it personally.

Anthropic do the right thing. Stop the guillotining of books now. I ask any thinking person compare the processing of books below. End to end the non destructive scanning on the right is faster and preserves knowledge for the ages. My advice to atone is to stock and maintain physical library free and open to anyone. In this machine I can scan 1000s pages a day and never destroy a book. No guillotine spines, no ripped the bindings.. just a normal book ready to be treasured for centuries. Any large AI company can afford this both financially and ethically.
