How many more model releases do we need for folks to realize we are not getting to magical superintelligence with what we got?
How many times do you have to see a model benchmaxxing to realize Humanity's Last Exam is a freaking idiotic name and that answering questions on it doesn't tell us shit about the true intelligence of the model?
How many models do we have to see demonstrating superficial intelligence but utterly failing at long running, contextual understanding for people to wake up and realize that AI is just another tool?
A good tool, a useful tool, a wonderful tool but not magic and not the end of all jobs and not the end of humanity or any other absurd fantasy of fools and dreamers.
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
@asymmetricinfo Margins can still be maintained in high density urban areas where doubles as a 24 hr bodega-type thing, but totally evaporated in 'burbs. Massive push by chains to get vaccine shots in stores was designed to reverse this, but didn't really move the need (3/3)
@asymmetricinfo 20 years ago people physically brought RX in, dropped it, waited for it to be filled, and bought other stuff. RX channels switched to electronic submission, drive throughs for pick-up became standard, and more recently Amazon effect for staples (2/-)
@alt_historian Check out the book Cahokia Jazz, great novelistic alternative history about the remnants of a barrier state in an alternative roaring 20s—exceptionally well written, great read.

I have people over to dinner about 15 to 20 times per year. I am invited over to dinner zero to one time per year. People often behave as if a social invitation is an onerous burden. They are in a long-term relationship with themselves.
I am not a hippie or a crunchy person. But he is completely right there is something very wrong with American food. And he’s right that the shocking thing is not that Doritos are bad for you, but that the same list of chemicals are in canned tomatoes, yogurt, basic ingredients for supposedly healthy dinners. If you grocery shop anywhere in Europe, your tomato sauce will have tomatoes, salt, sugar, garlic etc. Here, just look at the back next time you pick up a jar. Same thing with bread etc. If you visit or live in Europe for any length of time longer than a couple weeks, you will lose weight, many gut issues will resolve etc. People always say this is “walking” lol but now with step counters I can conclusively say I walk more here in New York than on vacation, and yet I lose about 5 lbs over the course of 2-3 weeks every time I visit family. It shouldn’t take a Herculean effort, extremely obsessive diet, or a drug to keep yourself basically within healthy ranges. It’s our food, and it’s a phenomenon in our food for the last 30 years.
@Empty_America There’s a lot of evidence of Roman merchant communities in India at the time, theories that JC traveled there where he learned eastern traditions
Does invading Russia in a comically small and heroic band of fast moving raiders count as "Bronze Age?"
Or this there some complex explanation of how this isn't actually cool and epic?
Come to think of it, denigrating the worth of a soldier’s service based on whether he deployed to a war zone is… kind of like denigrating the worth of a woman’s citizenship based on whether she happens to have children.
🚨 Yesterday, Chinese & Russian strategic bombers entered the U.S.−Alaska ADIZ at the same time, for the first time
A few new details:
- Came within ~200 miles of sovereign U.S. airspace
- Took off from the same Russian air base on a combined patrol & flying together
- 1st time Chinese H-6 strategic bombers encroached on the area & flew over the Bering Sea
- 8th joint patrol since 2019 (previous ops were conducted in the Sea of Japan, East China Sea, & WESTPAC)
- 🇺🇸 2x F-35 Lightning II & 2x F-16 Fighting Falcons, 🇨🇦 2x CF-18 Hornets intercepted
- Farthest distance Chinese bombers have flown during a strategic patrol mission
- Conducted over the Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, & northern Pacific Ocean
- Escorted at times by Russian Su-30SM & Su-35S fighter aircraft
- Lasted ~5 hours
“This is the first time that we have seen these two countries fly together like that,” U.S. SECDEF Austin said today. “If it happens again — if there is any kind of challenge from any direction — I have every confidence that NORTHCOM & NORAD will be at the ready.”
Based on reporting @ByChrisGordon, 25 July Pentagon press briefing, & @iejmedia. See thread below for more info + important context.
