The cost is insane here. $0.50 per minute. That’s $30 an hour. An outsourced human call center worker costs about $0.017 a minute (roughly $1.02/hour). You’re paying a 30x premium to talk to an AI Agent. Everything seems good till it isn't.
This is getting way too real! I can now get on a video call with my OpenClaw Agents to chat with them face to face. All i need to do is to send them a Google meet invite.
The Loss of Innocence. And What Comes After. I had a conversation with one of our developers recently that stuck with me. They love coding. Like genuinely love it. They’ve spent years getting good at it. And now they’re watching AI do things in seconds that used to take them hours. And they said something that I think a lot of developers are feeling right now but not saying out loud. It feels stupid. To keep perfecting something when a machine just leapfrogged you. That hit me. Because it’s not about losing a job. It’s about losing the thing that made the job meaningful. The craft. The pride. The identity you built around being good at something. And I think the closest analogy is the farmer in the 1800s watching a tractor for the first time. Or the carpenter seeing a machine produce a thousand widgets in the time it takes to make one by hand. These weren’t lazy people losing busywork. These were skilled people watching something they’d mastered become almost irrelevant overnight. And when you look at what actually happened. Yes, those changes were brutal. We didn’t need as many farmers or carpenters as we once did. If you were a so-so farmer or a so-so carpenter, your job was gone. But the people who truly loved their craft didn’t disappear. They became artisans. Their handmade work ended up valued more, not less, precisely because machines exist. Or they became the ones who learned to use the new tools in ways nobody else could imagine. The craft didn’t die. It evolved. There is a real loss of innocence in this moment. And I don’t want to minimize that. In IT right now, people are feeling something that farmers probably felt two hundred years ago. The ground shifting under your feet. The rules rewriting themselves in real time. But here’s what history tells us, without exception. In every technological revolution, the change is so enormous and so intimidating that it feels like the end. That’s what the disrupted generation always feels. And invariably, what follows is an explosion of growth and opportunity that no one in the middle of it could have imagined. So here’s what I told my developer. And what I’d tell anyone navigating this moment. Keep one foot in compassion. For yourself and the people around you. This is disorienting. It’s okay to grieve the way things were. And keep the other foot in curiosity. Because this is a massive opener of opportunity. The craft isn’t dying. It’s transforming. And the only real question now is how to make the most of what’s coming.
