It feels like, over the past 10 years, we’ve lost the plot on how to create a liveable region. Transit moves people. Regional highways move cars onto city streets. We need and want people in our cities. Cars, not so much. Ontario’s highway expansion program can feel glorious when you’re flying down the open road. But that freedom is short-lived. The highway ends and all those cars are too much for city streets. That's why the Bradford Bypass is a disaster for regional land-use planning and for our cities. It opens another frontier for sprawl while adding even more vehicles to an already overwhelmed road network. It is an intergenerational mistake. We can blow our brains out trying to make city streets safer by adding bike lanes, slowing traffic and redesigning intersections. But if we keep expanding highways across the region, our cities will keep absorbing the consequences. Traffic officers waving vehicles through intersections won’t solve congestion. Regional transit will.

What we tend to forget about highways is that they have to dump out all those cars somewhere. When we build more regional/highways, they act as a funnel, just jamming more cars into already congested cities. Transit, on the other hand, just dumps out people, who easily disperse.
