Life would be so much easier if we could just make them love each other! Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work out that way. Many leaders want all of their team members to love each other. Many more family members wants all of their family members to love each other. We can want whatever we want. At the end of the day, they are responsible for their own lives. We can not be responsible for other people's emotions. One leader I coached had four teenage daughters, who were constantly fighing with each other and his wife, their mother. His wife could not stand to be around his mother. The cousins lived nearby and occasionally added more combatants to the ongling war. He looked at me with hopeful eyes and said, "You are the coach. Help me! How can I make them all get along? I laughed and said, "I was just ranked as the #1 Leadership Coach in the World. I am not that good!" My advice to him was simple, "Love them all as best you can. Then, take a deep breath and 'let it go'. Life is good. Marshall

This is one post where I am best at 'practicing what I preach!' When tested on my aptitudes, my number one rated aptitude is 'generating ideas.' Another good one, 'effectively communicating my ideas.' Since these are considered 'aptitiudes' not 'achievements'. These could be considered (in Picasso's terms) my gifts. My purpose of life is to come up with as many helpful ideas as I can and then give them away to as many people as I can. Anne Milgram is a brilliant lawyer and a wonderful person. I asked her what advice she would give to young professionals. Her answer was simple: “Find a great mentor.” I love Anne’s advice. When I reflect on my own career, so much of my success can be traced back to the wonderful mentors who helped me along the way. People like Paul Hersey, Frances Hesselbein, Alan Mulally, and Jim Kim invested their time in me, shared their wisdom, and helped me grow. Their guidance shaped not only my career, but also how I try to help others. Great mentors do more than give advice. They open our eyes to possibilities we might not see on our own. They challenge us, encourage us, and sometimes believe in us before we fully believe in ourselves. My advice for you is simple. Do what Anne suggests. Find a great mentor. And when you do, appreciate the gift. Learn all that you can. Someday, do your best to pass that gift along to someone else. Life is good. Marshall

As I have grown older, my mission has become simpler and simpler - to help you have a just little better life. Over the years I have become much more of a realist. I may not transform your world. I may not change your multi-billion-dollar corporation. But perhaps I can help you have a little better life. Maybe only a better minute. That is good enough for me. You are not perfect. You are not going to become perfect. That is OK. If you are reading this, I assume you are an achiever. You are not going to stop trying to improve - that is who you are. And that is a good thing. You are still human. You spill things. You get angry. You say things you regret. You embarrass the people you love. You make mistakes - probably every day. Guess what? So does everyone else. The good news is: we can all get better. The bad news? It is a lifelong drama. So keep trying. Keep learning. Keep growing. But do not tie your peace of mind to some imaginary version of perfection. You can get better and still be human. You can make progress and still mess up. You can aim high and still fall short. Over and over again. Make peace with just being human. Life is good. Marshall

Please quit being so hard on yourself! My typical readers are smart, hard-working, and highly driven to achieve. That is the good news. The challenge - based on all of my LinkedIn polls - is that you can also be too hard on yourself. Life is short. I am not very worried about you being lazy or unambitious. I am much more concerned about you being overly self-critical. You have probably read many books and articles about how to achieve more. You already know how to push yourself. My hope is something different. I hope you learn to enjoy your journey through life. You do not need to prove your worth every day. You do not need to win every moment. You are already doing better than you think. Be kind to yourself. Appreciate your effort. Recognize your progress. Thank you for reading my posts. Life is good. You are just as important to the people you care for as they are impotant to you. Many of you, my readers, are deeply committed to helping others. You give your time, your energy, and your attention freely. You want to make a difference. You want to help the people you care about succeed and be happy. In the process, it is easy to forget something important. Taking care of you. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is necessary. When you are exhausted, stressed, or overwhelmed, you cannot be at your best for the people who depend on you. The people who love you do not just appreciate what you do for them. They care about you as a human being. They want you to be healthy. They want you to be happy. When you take time to rest, to reflect, and to care for your own well-being, you are not taking anything away from others. You are giving them a better version of you.
