Reflecting on the past weekend at @IDA_Ontario and had the pleasure of listening to Anita Archer twice and so many archerisms, but love the ones about explicitly teaching vs discovery learning. So many great reminders, learning and laughs! #LitLearn2024
I think my thing with edutwitter is that I don't want to see overly confident proclamations of 'what works' as though it applies to everyone. I much prefer quiet shares of 'we did this, isn't it lovely, it might work for you too'. 😊

@SusanGodsland @c_mackechnie Teaching phonics to pass the PSC is always going to miss the point. Many pass and can't read well, many who can read struggle with nonsense words. We must teach phonics for reading and spelling for as long as needed. It's never as simple as a test. Focus on what children need.

@SusanGodsland @c_mackechnie I think it’s important that teachers know there’s still much more that phonics helps with, even for children making good progress. Specially in spelling where phonics is often not used at all - it’s not time to “move on from phonics” in Y2 - it’s time to bed it in as a strategy.

A teacher told me that a 'cream' background and wider letter spacing help some pupils in reading. This surely should be part of the Science of Reading. 'Read, Write Inc.' does this, but because it's a systematic synthetic programme, its content is rubbish, and it has red words!

@Edmund_B_W As a Headteacher, I am furious. Not because I’m ’in the window’, because I’m not. But because this is absolutely the wrong decision. All a single judgement does is put indescribable pressure on headteachers that the success school, kids, house prices etc rest on one word.
