Received my copy of the illustrated Poetic Edda by @AHomelyHouse this week. It is large, amazingly bound, full of illustrations and ornaments that make it feel like it is an ancient secret that has been kept for a millennia. I know they have Gawain and the Green Knight as an upcoming project!

On a very practical level, the more degrees you are removed from an act of almsgiving, the less it transforms you. And the transformation is really the point. Christian almsgiving is not simply about the alleviation of temporary suffering, but about the transformation of the giver. It's an unfair exchange in which the poor man gets temporary relief from physical deprivation but the rich man gets a much more eternal benefit. None of this is present when we outsource almsgiving to the State, or even to large philanthropic organizations. I do understand action at scale is sometimes necessary, but when we do those things we need to understand them in the sense of common weal; they are not the true fulfillment of the command to love my neighbor as myself.

There is a great piece in the Wall Street Journal today, written by Sian Leah Beilock, president of Dartmouth College. She acknowledges what many of us have been saying for some time, namely, that our university system has become corrupt, and she proposes commonsense solutions. First, make a university education more affordable. Tuition and costs have become just ridiculous, especially at schools that boast massive endowments. Second, make the investment worth it. Do more to guarantee that graduates actually get jobs. Third (and to my mind most importantly), "re-center education on learning rather than political posturing." Amen! Finally! And fourth (also music to my ears), "emphasize equal opportunity, not equal outcomes." The former is a basic American principal; the latter is dangerous Woke nonsense. I was very gratified to read all of this from an Ivy League university president. Sign of hope.

@PaulVanderKlay Also if you get the chance to visit Ravenna I highly recommend it. Some of the earliest Byzantine mosaics are there, and they are incredible.

@PaulVanderKlay I was just here a week ago. Incredible stuff. Some of the exterior actually IS Byzantine - taken in the sack of 1204. That whole area of Italy was also historically a part of the Eastern Empire for a while. Appreciate your content. Hope you enjoy your trip.
