My thoughts are with my colleagues (and others) in southern Brazil who have been hit with devastating floods theguardian.com/world/article/…
Realizing that this article is „a classic“ now for me. Amazingly clear & well described. It is just a pain, that after 6+ years a lot of people don’t know the difference. martinfowler.com/articles/produ…
Of course we’re doing this in Boston, where it’s the Blizzard of ‘78. But no matter, it’s still snow, and we can joke about it now that it’s April.

Much of the chatter about GenAI is writing new code, but that's a small part of our work. Adam Tornhill talks to me and my Thoughtworks colleagues about how AI can help with refactoring. thoughtworks.com/insights/podca…
On @HeavyCardboard we're experimenting with some short board game videos. On this one, I describe the Caylus test, and three games that pass it. (13 mins) youtube.com/watch?v=0B3STs…
FINAL § Alessio Ferri and Tom Coggrave complete their article about introducing seams into mainframe systems, by looking how we can use data replication martinfowler.com/articles/uncov…
NEW § Mainframe processing is often organized into pipelines of batch processes consuming and creating data files. Alessio Ferri and Tom Coggrave show a couple of ways to introduce seams into these pipelines. martinfowler.com/articles/uncov…
It was great to be in the room with my colleagues as we hatched the 30th radar.
It was great to be in the room with my colleagues as we hatched the 30th radar.
NEW § Alessio Ferri and Tom Coggrave move on to analyzing the internal seams of the application by treating the database as a coarse-grained seam. They describe how they introduced seams into the database readers and writers. martinfowler.com/articles/uncov…
One of my all-time favorites got a new edition & we are streaming it tonight! #Shipyard (second edition) from @games_delicious & #RioGrandeGames for your viewing pleasure, tonight at 1900 EDT youtube.com/watch?v=LyUHVp… & Twitch.tv/heavycardboard See ya tonight!

Ok, this is it. Went to Glassdoor and am removing every single past contribution (salary, review, rating) I made. The point of Glassdoor was that they keep all this anonymous. The company doxxing people is not something I want to contribute to.

Refrigerators are more energy efficient, come with better storage layouts, ice makers, water filters, open door sensors, and list of other improvements that work so well we take them for granted and call them boring.
@kelseyhightower Actually I hope Apple does not go down the appliance route! Hardly any innovation in refrigerators last few decades…
I'll never get over the fact that my face is on the wall of NC State 🥹
@martinfowler Was there last May. Gorgeous coastline.
another unfortunate reminder that social media is less and less trustworthy. Hard to tell if an endorsement/positive comment from a large account is genuine or paid (+ undisclosed). I hope this trend will eventually reverse, and disclaimers for being paid to post become common.
The part I really appreciate about Twitter/X is so many people share their raw thoughts. Instead of jumping to criticise when you disagree: consider why they might see it that way? What environment do they operate in? How similar/different is it to yours? You can learn so much.
Under-engineered code is a more common problem than over-engineering.
Lesson Re-learned: what's left of Twitter is much less annoying if you don't let it go to the "For you" tab. Hate it when it does that.
@martinfowler Interesting. Maybe I should try to reproduce this experiment in my team
The most important thing is to adapt your remote strategy to your company culture and the needs of your people, for example to accommodate childcare as that disproportionately burdens mothers, but you do need to hang out occasionally. Ask them how they want to do that
NEW POST I'm hearing of more teams working in a remote-first style. But many are making a mistake by never meeting face-to-face. Effective remote-first teams I've encountered do periodic gatherings 2-4 times a year. martinfowler.com/bliki/Periodic…
@martinfowler we used to have occasional offsites. now smart teams have occasional onsites.
Even if you have no inclination ever to step foot outside of Apple's walled garden, you should wish all the alternative computing platforms well. The more choice, the more alternatives, the more good ideas have a chance to blossom.
This is like saying that, because we have calculators and spreadsheets, nobody needs to learn mathematics or economics.
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, argues that we should stop saying kids should learn to code. He argues the rise of AI means we can replace programming languages with human language prompts thus enabling everyone to be a programmer. AI will kill coding.
I feel honored to have an old comic featured on Mr. Fowler's blog.
NEW POST David Tan and Jessie Wang reflect on how regular engineering practices such as testing and refactoring helped them deliver a prototype LLM application rapidly and reliably. martinfowler.com/articles/engin…
I don't like to give opinionated advice, but here is an exception: Stop "idolizing" people who have lots of {followers/likes/subscribers other signals} and be just as critical with anything you read/hear from them as with any other source. Includes me! blog.pragmaticengineer.com/critical-think…
For small-time angle investors (those not doing 10+ deals for 5 years straight) we really should rename angle investing to “angel donating.” I know angles making positive returns. They do it with a much more professional approach, 10+ deals/year, plenty of time invested etc
@GergelyOrosz Angel investing at small scale is some fucked up flex people should give up on. Investings in the name - if people can't do it, they shouldn't. If you cant afford 10+ investments/year you should stick to ETFs as there's no way you're "investing" at that point, you're donating.
When you have a brand known for reliability, it's much easier to sell products - even if they are subpar vs competition. But when you have a brand known for unreliablity, it's harder to sell products that are better than the rest on the market. Google slowly becoming this brand.
Excited to have read Martin Fowler's overhauled Continuous Integration article, which shaped much of my thinking through this fun career. 📚 He's done a major 2024 update! It's a must-read for all eng and eng-adjacent. ☕️ Goes well with a morning coffee! martinfowler.com/articles/conti…
@robin_blix @martinfowler The keyword is "teams". Teams can do this - groups of people who actually work together. Many group up some engineers assign tasks to individuals who then work alone and raise PRs. That is not teamwork. A group in the same Slack channel is not necessarily a team.
