You have to take a chance on new ideas and original worlds. Franchises may be able to keep you afloat but they offer diminishing returns at best. Each time you go to that well you dilute its strength. Relying on them is choosing death by a thousand cuts.

I doubt the execs who greenlit a mid-budget drag racing movie about DVD theft knew they were kickstarting a multi-million dollar franchise. Star Wars wasn't made so they could sell Chewbacca slippers. You don't put the cart before the horse. Make a good movie and then make money
