With regards to Germany and immigration, the cardinal sin always was to tie being a German citizen to being German (Jus Sanguinis) with little to zero interest to assimilate immigrants. Everybody was happy with them living in their districts, marrying each other, not entering the general job market, using the term Gastarbeiter - guest worker to describe their temporary welcome in society. Not teaching German, not integrating into schools and so on. That created a massive societal parallel structure not standing on the constitution or any laws for that matter.

@PeteLongworth @catrin_davies1 It was a high holiday, the weekend, many went home to their families, it is a rural region and terrorists infiltrated from around 30 entrance points and focussed on local police, local army bases. The festival seemed not to be the target, it got caught in the middle.
