With few mandates, masking decisions have become more complex, blending covid prevalence, personal risk, risk to others, risk attitudes, vax status, social pressure, & exhaustion. @MorningEdition @NPR, I weigh in, along with Wm. Schaffer & @MonicaGandhi9. npr.org/2023/02/10/115…
@Bob_Wachter @MorningEdition @NPR My advice simple: vaccines work really well across populations; mRNA vaccines best for older & immunocompromised as so powerful; each should do what feels comfortable to them for masking, some recommend; Cochrane review shows us cannot mandate masks medscape.com/viewarticle/97…
@MonicaGandhi9 @Bob_Wachter @MorningEdition @NPR Vaccines only approach ignores the most common adverse outcome from infection: #LongCovid — vaccines reduce a bit, but only to levels which still remain a categorical public health emergency. You can’t have a sound position on mitigation policy without accounting for this.
@MonicaGandhi9 @Bob_Wachter @MorningEdition @NPR Also, for the love of god, if you want people to make their own decision, tell them about the risk first — otherwise it’s deliberate misinformation. Absolutely no other way to look at it.
