What if we make all of our librarian positions 29 hours a week so we don't have to pay benefits? I suppose this means they don't get student loan forgiveness unless they get another librarian position that is 1 hour week. Not our problem though

So... Everyone knows that nobody is FORCED to check out books at a public library right? You can choose to check-out whichever books suit your family's beliefs, values, and ideas. If you don't like a book, don't check it out.

I just… We do need to have convos about balanced collections. Sometimes, I see some baby librarians announcing they would never buy “that book” about whatever blather is being featured on Fox News. If we want to keep the moral high ground over censors /1

I want to make very clear that @JasonReynolds83 had absolutely nothing to do with my ill-chosen example at the ALA panel. Furthermore I'm horrified that I gave the impression that I advocate buying books that deny the Holocaust for a public or school library. I do not.

I think we also need to stop discussing these things in terms of whether something is factual as the litmus for getting in the library. We carry plenty of items not considered facts: bigfoot, healing crystals, American as a force for good… /5

Is it a bestseller? Have major media platforms covered it? Are there multiple patron requests for it? We’re not seeing this with holocaust denial books, so there’s literally no reason to buy them and give them more legitimacy by saying their views balance the collection. /4

A balanced collection doesn’t mean we get books for every possible garbage opinion out there, regardless of how unpopular it is. If you’re not sure if you should order something, ask yourself if it would stand out to your patrons that this book is absent /3

we need to buy the books that represent mainstream conservative opinions too even if they are shitty. However, holocaust denial isn’t something that we even have patrons making requests for (at least not yet ugh) so shouldn’t even be in a convo about balanced collections /2

@blackgirlinmain Same. I realized a lot of the online approach involves shaming and trying to own people (proving you’re the most right as though it were a competition). Most of these strategies literally don’t change anyone’s mind and isn’t that the whole point?

Before I became an attorney, I was a sex worker. It would have been so much harder for me to transition out of sex work if I had a criminal conviction. Decriminalize, decarcerate, and destigmatize sex work.

@CaitJGibson Yep, my friend who’s 35 has had stage 4 colon cancer going on two years now. Same thing, ran in her family. She is still alive but it is likely a matter of time/how long she can keep tolerating chemo
