One of the bitterest pills to swallow for Gen X was realizing that, thanks to movie propaganda, we grew up believing the Myth of the Super Competent Government Official. I realized this watching The Fugitive recently. Hunt for Red October is another example in this genre. I slept better at night thinking we were safe in the hands of morally perfect, wonderfully competent officials who tirelessly pursued justice and kept the world safe. Yes, it was never really true, but at least they used to do a better job covering up their inept stupidity.
