I was writing with a first grader yesterday when she stopped and said, “I made a uh-stake (mistake).” Me: Ok, no problem. We can fix it. Her: (smiling) Do you know Bob Ross? Me: Yes, why? Her: You’re like Bob because he says uh-stakes are just happy accidents. 😃🎨

Business model of the century: Tier 1 = more than Tier 2/3. Require Tier 2/3 as Tier 1 instruction. How? More problems= more $$. Create a narrative, legislate, mandate! Use low level materials requiring little teacher knowledge/preparation. Wash, rinse, repeat state by state.

Then they made every school use the same after Covid. Teachers and students hated the mandated one. Guess what happened to those scores. 🤦♂️
So, what are the legal ramifications for approved (mandated) curriculum lists with no evidence base but paired with threats of withholding both state AND federal money for non-compliance within local control states? Not asking for a friend 🤔@GovMikeDeWine @OHEducation

Thank you Karen, very kind. I was also in one of the first trained classes of Reading Recovery, but in Ohio. It was Reading Recovery that most positively impacted my teaching of up-and-coming readers and, finally, made me a competent reading teacher. Still true.
There is no literacy teacher who does not understand the opportunities of Invented Spelling. These bad takes on literacy instruction are disturbing to watch each day.
Yes, spelling inventories (e.g., Words Their Way) and everyday writing give us a window in alphabetic principle, phonics knowledge, and phonemic awareness if analyzed well.
