If your kid gets cancer in the US, and you’re not insured, it will either not be fully treated and/or hospital bills will bankrupt you. If a billionaire builds a death trap and takes it for an underwater excursion, the government will pay for the very expensive rescue mission.
To be fair, I actually personally think the government should pay for the rescue mission. But in the hierarchy of what I think the government should pay for, the cancer kid is much higher on my list.
@iamharaldur Just to clarify - even if you are insured, the insurance company may still decide not to cover it leading to the same results. If the insurance decides it's not the best course of treatment or is 'experimental' or some other nonsense they make up, we're SOL regardless.
@iamharaldur The number of people, unerringly conservative, who are completely missing the point is staggering.
@iamharaldur If you are insured, this may still be true. And if you have government insurance (Medicaid), you won't be bankrupted, but you definitely won't get complete care. The only way to win in the US is to be wealthy. Everyone else is considered disposable, our existence an imposition.
@iamharaldur @Chiangel1984 If you get cancer in the US, it’ll ruin you. Found out I had cancer and have been drowning in every conceivable way ever since.
@iamharaldur Healthcare is a very valid issue. But the USCG’s job is maritime search and rescue. There’s not really any comparison.
@iamharaldur Too be fair, if your kid went missing in the mountains, there would be a massive multi agency rescue mission under way that would cost probably millions of dollars that would be covered by taxes. I see your point but a recuse is a little different than medical treatment.
@iamharaldur Bankruptcy isn't nearly the dramatic event you people try to make it. I'll take bankruptcy over the death of one of my kids any day of the week.
@iamharaldur Guess what? People die of cancer even if they are rich. Or have insurance.
