While I have some sympathy, I think academics attempting to do this ends up worse than academics just trying to convey information. In the best world we'd be masterful prose stylists, but irl our attempting to achieve the best is worse than focusing on getting the basics right.

@socialistdogmom I find most of the responses here puzzling. Scholarship usually isn’t for a wide audience, it’s for the scholarly community. Dissertations lack quality, though, because most graduate students aren’t supported financially or professionally, not because they have a narrow audience

@socialistdogmom Most should be read as a rough draft. They’re largely written under duress with no material or intellectual support. Not to say academics shouldn’t be held to rigorous standards, but it’s an indication of lack of material support for quality scholarship and mentorship by advisors
