I realized this morning why the whole "Elon arguing with Twitter devs and firing them" brouhaha of the last few days has hit me on a physical level. It's because, as a senior IC dev, one of the most important aspects of my job is preventing crap like this. (Long 🧵incoming...)
So, what you get is the game of Scapegoat Telephone. It works like this: 1) IC dev complains offhandedly to his manager that they discovered the app is doing 10,000 FizzBuzz a second. A second! 2) This sounds bad to the manager, so they pass it along to *their* manager.
3) Rinse and repeat until it reaches senior management, 4) This random factoid now becomes The Reason Things Are Going Wrong. Now, actually, the truth is one of three things.
1) Yes, the root of all their problems is the 10,000 FizzBuzz a second. A dev reduces the number of FizzBuzz, everything suddenly starts working better, much rejoicing! The chances of this being the case are equal to winning PowerBall. Super rare.
2) No, the 10,000 FizzBuzz a second has nothing to do with the app's problems. If the dev had profiled (which they didn't), they'd have discovered FizzBuzz are basically free. The problem lies elsewhere. Getting rid of FizzBuzz is wasted time. This is very common.
3) The 10,000 FizzBuzz a second *are* bad but they are just symptoms of deeper, more fundamental design problems that will require significant engineering effort to correct and carries significant risk of destabilizing the app. Also, very common.
In the ideal case, management has trusted senior ICs they can turn to and ask them to go figure it out. The senior ICs have the necessary context (and credibility with the team) to go sit with the code and the team and figure out what's going on and the best course of action.
In the non-ideal case, management has no one to turn to, so they start fire drills -- fix the FizzBuzz problem! This is our most urgent priority! But since FizzBuzz isn't really the problem, this doesn't help. So the Scapegoat Telephone game starts all over again.
And that feeds a negative feedback loop where the team feels that management is out of touch and arbitrary, and management feels the team is incompetent, the problem is never solved, and things fall apart!
That last part should seem familiar. It's just so painful to watch.
Then they can report back and create consensus between management and the team about what to do. This creates a positive feedback loop, the team feels heard and respected, management feels the team is competent, and the problem gets solved!
When technical people become managers, it is imperative for them to understand that they will no longer possess the context necessary to discuss or evaluate low-level technical design. Some get this, most don't. A blessed few are able to still do it, but they are super rare.
