Dietary despotism? Bhai, it was a state dinner, not a food emergency declared under Article 356. In 2005, Iceland’s President Olafur R Grímsson hosted President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam with an all-vegetarian state dinner. Nobody called Iceland a vegetarian dictatorship. In 2023, the UAE President hosted PM Modi in Abu Dhabi with a fully vegetarian banquet - no meat, no eggs, no dairy. Again, civilization survived. At the White House in 2023, Biden’s state dinner for Modi was overwhelmingly vegetarian, with sea bass available only on request. The chefs explicitly said the menu was curated around the guest and the cultural occasion. And at #BRICS , guests were not trapped in some paneer detention camp. Reporting says non-vegetarian options were available at their hotels. So calling one curated vegetarian banquet “a suffocating, fanatical mindset imposing itself on a captive majority” is magnificent theatre. Who exactly was captive? Xi? Putin? Iran’s delegation? These are heads of state, not schoolchildren being force-fed tinda. A vegetarian state dinner is hospitality when Iceland does it, sensitivity when the UAE does it, sophistication when the White House does it — but apparently “despotism” when India does it. That’s not a food argument. That’s ideology desperately looking for a chicken leg.
Actually, no. There are few things more coercive than dietary despotism. Look beyond the food and you can see a suffocating, intolerant, chauvinistic, fanatical mindset at work, imposing the values of a bigoted minority on a vast and captive majority.
Xi didn’t show up because of the veg carb slop — source: vibes. 😂 Xi attended the summit, held a bilateral with Modi, discussed border peace, trade and business links, then skipped the gala dinner. The reason was not officially stated; reports said he may simply have returned to his hotel to rest after a long day. But sure, why let facts ruin a good food fantasy? And “veg carb slop” apparently now includes Himalayan gucchi morels, saffron, asparagus, paneer, millets, regional breads, poriyal, saaru, jalebi and phirni. That’s not analysis, that’s what happens when someone looks at a state banquet and gets personally offended by a mushroom. Xi skipped one dinner. He did not issue a joint statement with the chicken lobby.

People are mocking this BRICS state dinner because it is vegetarian. This is not “just a vegetarian menu.” It is a carefully curated showcase of Indian ingredients, regional traditions and fine-dining technique. Look at what is actually on the table: • Gucchi / Himalayan

Rajdeep, you turned one vegetarian state dinner into a constitutional emergency because the mutton didn’t get a cabinet berth. 😂 “State-mandated vegetarianism”? Calm down. It was a banquet menu, not an ordinance banning kebabs. And this “only 20–30% Indians are vegetarian” line is BS. Pew found 39% of Indian adults identify as vegetarian, and many others restrict meat by day, faith or occasion. India’s food habits are a little more complicated than your post, brother. Also, coastal food = fish and Awadhi = meat is not really celebrating diversity. It is reducing entire cuisines to one stereotype. A state dinner is curated. It is not a food census where every community, protein source and regional dish must report for attendance. This menu showcased poriyal, gucchi morels, saffron, millets, khandvi, saaru, paneer, jalebi, phirni and so on. That is India too. If one vegetarian dinner makes you fear for India’s diversity, the problem may not be the menu. It may be the imagination. Sometimes paneer is just paneer, Rajdeep. It is not majoritarianism in gravy. 😀 Take is easy brother.
INTERESTING: the menu for the leaders at the BRICS dinner was ‘pure’ veg. Nothing wrong with promoting vegetarianism as long as it doesn’t become a fetish. A majority of Indians are non veg (surveys show only 20-30% are veg) and unmatched cuisine diversity is the hallmark of

Saba ji ne journalism ko chhod kar ab menu astrology shuru kar di hai. “Chinese ko ye pasand nahi aaya hoga.” “Putin steak-wala banda lagta hai.” Wah BC. Ab foreign policy bhi shakal dekh ke decide hogi? Xi ko dekho aur bolo chowmein, Putin ko dekho aur steak? BC, state banquet hai ya Tinder ka bio analysis? Aur Eiffel Tower ko ismein ghusa diya — kyunki jab logic kam pad jaaye, purana outrage garnish ki tarah daal do. Menu mein khandvi, gucchi morels, saffron, paneer, millets, poriyal, saaru, jalebi, phirni sub hai, aur madam ko dikha “carrots and millets.” Aur maje ki baat to ye hai ki “there is no way Chinese enjoyed this meal.” Source? Trust me bro, I once went to China. Matlab ek baar China gaye aur 1.4 billion logon ke taste buds ka power of attorney le aaye? Journalism kam, nonsense confidence zyada. Guest ne khana enjoy kiya ya nahi, pata nahi. Lekin kuch logon ko vegetarian plate dekh ke jo intellectual loose motion hua hai, wo clearly visible hai.
Bro, those N₂O numbers cannot be right as written. The entire planet - natural + human sources combined - emits about 17 Tg of nitrogen as N₂O per year, equivalent to roughly 27 million tonnes of N₂O. Your claim of 1.5–2 BILLION tonnes from crops alone would be around 50–75× the entire global N₂O budget. And “360 million tonnes from poultry” is also larger than total global N₂O emissions. If you actually mean CO₂-equivalent, then say CO₂e and provide the source. Second problem: “1.5 billion hectares of crops” does not somehow rescue poultry. Chickens eat crops. Feed production, fertilizer use, land use and associated N₂O are part of poultry’s lifecycle footprint. You cannot count crop emissions against plant food and then pretend the crops fed to chickens disappear from the chicken column. That is literally double-counting the farm and forgetting the bird eats from it. On comparable lifecycle data, poultry is about 9.9 kg CO₂e/kg, versus rice approx 4.5 and wheat/rye approx 1.6. Scale matters, yes. But scale does not overturn efficiency. We grow vastly more crops because crops feed humans and livestock. First fix the units. Then fix the double counting. Then we can discuss climate.
People are mocking this BRICS state dinner because it is vegetarian. This is not “just a vegetarian menu.” It is a carefully curated showcase of Indian ingredients, regional traditions and fine-dining technique. Look at what is actually on the table: • Gucchi / Himalayan morels — among India’s most prized mushrooms. They grow seasonally in Himalayan regions, are difficult to source in quantity and are traditionally hand-collected, which is why good-quality morels command premium prices. • Saffron — one of the world’s most expensive spices by weight. Thousands of delicate crocus flowers are needed to produce a small amount of saffron. • Mamra almonds — a premium almond variety valued for its rich flavour, high natural oil content and limited production compared with ordinary commercial almonds. • Sheermal — a saffron-scented bread with Persian-Mughal culinary roots, traditionally associated with rich festive and royal-style cuisine. • Khandvi Mille-Feuille — not simply “gram flour.” Khandvi itself requires precision to cook, spread paper-thin and roll properly; presenting it as a mille-feuille turns a Gujarati classic into fine dining without losing its identity. • Khumb Galouti — a vegetarian interpretation of the famous galouti style, using mushrooms to create the same soft, delicate texture while keeping the menu entirely vegetarian. • Millets — ancient Indian grains brought into a modern state-banquet setting, combining heritage with contemporary nutrition and sustainability. • Phirni with mulberries and gold leaf — a traditional milk-and-rice dessert finished with fruit and edible gold, giving a centuries-old dish a ceremonial, luxurious presentation. And that is what makes this menu impressive. It moves from Gujarat to North India, the Himalayas, South India and Old Delhi; from humble grains and lentils to saffron, morels, premium almonds and gold leaf. This was not vegetarian food chosen because something was “missing.” It was vegetarian food chosen because Indian cuisine is rich enough to make meat completely unnecessary. The menu is thoughtful, regional, luxurious and unmistakably Indian. Sometimes luxury is not a steak on a plate. Sometimes it is a wild Himalayan morel, a few strands of saffron, and centuries of culinary knowledge behind them. #brics #india #bharat #GOI #narendramodi #vegetarian #luxurious #food #foodfascism
"Chinese President didn’t even do lunch" - except it wasn’t lunch. It was the gala dinner. Xi attended the BRICS summit, met Modi bilaterally, discussed border stability, trade, market access and India-China ties, and then skipped the dinner for reasons that were not officially disclosed. So turning “Xi skipped one gala dinner” into “he rejected the vegetarian food” is not truth bro. Its just your day fantasy. Also, delegates were being served non-vegetarian dishes such as nalli nihari at their hotels during the summit. So the idea that India imposed two days of compulsory vegetarianism is equally creative. At least get the meal right before coming to conclusion.
Kailash bhai ka haal dekh ke lag raha hai BRICS summit nahi, uski shaadi ka buffet cancel ho gaya. 😂 Pehle chicken maanga. Phir Xi Jinping le aaya. Phir Vedas. Phir animal sacrifice. Phir “foreign guests”. Ab bas UN Security Council se resolution pass karwana baaki hai - Paneer ne mere human rights violate kiye. Bhai, ek dinner menu ne itna hila diya? Har reply mein goalpost utha ke 20 km door rakh deta hai aur phir khud hi bolta hai “answer this”. Chicken menu mein nahi tha, Kailash. Desh nahi toot gaya. Civilization nahi gir gayi. Xi ne FIR nahi likhwai. Bas tumhara non-veg counter nahi laga. Recover kar lo, BC. Paneer personal nahi tha.

“State-mandated vegetarianism”? 🤣 Bro, it was a curated #BRICS banquet menu, not a constitutional amendment banning kebabs. And that "85% meat-eating India" line is being presented as if it were settled census data. Pew’s nationwide survey found 39% of Indian adults identify as #vegetarian , while 81% either avoid meat altogether or restrict what meat they eat or when they eat it. India’s food habits are far more complicated than one dramatic percentage. A state banquet is also not required to reproduce the national diet in exact demographic proportions. Hosts curate menus to showcase a particular part of their culture. This one highlighted India’s vegetarian culinary tradition with gucchi morels, saffron, millets, regional dishes and traditional desserts. The gala dinner was indeed vegetarian; that is a menu choice, not “force-feeding” or state coercion. By this logic, every Italian diplomatic dinner needs pizza, seafood, steak, pasta and gelato simultaneously or Italy has “undermined diversity.” Calling a vegetarian banquet "minoritarian excess" is especially funny when the actual menu was designed to showcase one of India’s oldest and richest food traditions. Criticise the menu if you dislike it. But please don’t promote a dinner to the rank of authoritarian state policy just because the chicken didn’t get invited.
Our #50WordEdit on state-mandated vegetarianism
#India is hosting #BRICS — leaders representing some of the world’s largest emerging economies are in #Delhi discussing war, trade, energy, payments, global institutions and the balance of power. BRICS itself now includes 11 countries and is explicitly seeking a greater voice in a system historically dominated by Western powers. And somehow, when it is time to visually introduce the summit… Al Jazeera finds a man on a bicycle. The New York Times finds a man on a tiny motorbike wearing shorts. Nothing wrong with either man. Nothing wrong with bicycles or motorcycles. They are normal India. But photography is also editorial language. There were heads of state, diplomatic motorcades, the summit venue, delegations, ceremonial welcomes, modern Delhi, the actual leaders and hundreds of other possible frames. Yet two major international outlets independently landed on almost the same visual vocabulary: giant BRICS/Modi backdrop… ordinary Indian man on a humble two-wheeler passing in front. Maybe pure coincidence. But imagine India covering a #G7 summit and repeatedly choosing a homeless tent, an ageing pickup truck or a guy on a bicycle as the defining foreground image of Washington, London or Paris. We would immediately be lectured about “framing,” “stereotypes” and “context.” That is the point. Nobody is asking foreign media to become India’s PR department. Criticise India. Question BRICS. Report the traffic restrictions, protests, wars and disagreements. But notice how easily the old visual template survives: India can host presidents, negotiate geopolitics and chair a major international summit… …and somehow the camera still desperately needs to find that bicycle. India has changed enormously. Some lenses apparently haven't. #GOI #NarendraModi #IndianPolitics #Media #India #internationalmedia
When I hosted the President of #India for State Dinner on the first such visit to a #Nordic country, I also offered an all-vegetarian menu. More than 20 years ago! And in #Iceland where it is not easy to be vegetarian!!
