One year ago today, I got the chance of a lifetime to work for Boxing News. I was very lucky to get the opportunity. Met some great people and am thankful to anyone who has allowed me to interview them and told their story. Onwards and upwards.

It's a rainy day — and so it's a good day to write and read. Inspired by Nomadland's scenes at Badlands, I'm reading the nonfiction book that inspired the movie. It seems a natural follow to Barbara Ehrenreich's excellent "Nickel and Dimed." This passage:

Let's all keep in mind that Ryan Garcia purposefully missed weight and had an advantage. That being said, very few thought he was mentally fit for this fight. Turns out, his fighting instincts pulled off the massive upset.
Ryan Garcia is one of the more naturally gifted fighters in boxing today and his left hook is one of the best punches in the sport. Imagine if he was a fully focused fighter. Hopefully this result galvanizes him rather than makes him think he can always cut corners.
Watching #HaneyGarcia. When Haney went down in round 7, his legs were gone and twice he went down again that was ruled slips. I understand ruling one a slip but the second time you gotta call a knockdown when a fighter just falls to the canvas.
Always interesting to check what consensus scoring would have come out to: in this case, 7-5 Garcia. My personal card was 6-6 on rounds for Garcia
