This historic photograph documents Jewish women in Bessarabia during the Holocaust after they had endured brutal abuse amid the violence of the Second World War. Taken in September 1941, the image comes from a period when Bessarabia was under Romanian administration following the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. Jewish communities throughout the region were subjected to persecution, forced displacement, deportation, and other atrocities as part of the Holocaust. Historians estimate that tens of thousands of Jews from Bessarabia lost their lives through mass killings, deportations, forced labor, starvation, and disease. Families were torn apart, communities were destroyed, and countless lives were forever changed. Today, photographs like this stand as powerful historical evidence of the immense human cost of hatred and persecution. They preserve the memory of those who suffered and remind future generations why these events must never be forgotten.

Eight year old Zayin Berry was at a skate park in Somerton, Arizona, when he saw a group of older children throwing a tiny kitten between them like a football. He knew they were bigger than him. Arguing wasn't going to stop them. So Zayin went and got the one thing he valued most. His skateboard. He walked over and offered it to the boys in exchange for the kitten. They took the skateboard, left with it, and dropped the frightened little cat behind. The kitten was covered in dirt, struggling to breathe, and suffering from a severe eye infection. Zayin carried him straight to his mother, and together they rushed him to the Humane Society of Yuma. Veterinarians managed to save the kitten's life, but one eye could not be saved. The family named him Peaches and gave him a permanent home. When Zayin was told Peaches would lose an eye, he had only one concern. "I don't care as long as he lives, because he's my best friend." For giving up something he loved to save a life that couldn't save itself, the ASPCA named Zayin Berry its 2025 Kid of the Year. Peaches still sleeps beside him every night, a quiet reminder that one child's kindness changed everything.

In the old Scottish cottages there was a bed built like a small wooden room, with doors you could close against the dark, and generations were born and died inside it... They called it the box bed. In a but and ben, where the whole family lived in one or two rooms, the box bed was a marvel of making the most of very little. Built into the thick stone wall, panelled in dark timber, sometimes with sliding or hinged doors, it was a bed you climbed inside and shut behind you. On a Highland winter night, when the wind came off the moor and found every gap in the walls, that enclosed wooden box was the warmest and safest place in the house. It did more than keep out the cold. It gave a scrap of privacy in a home that had almost none. It kept the draughts and the smoke and the prying eyes at bay. Children were tucked into it, top to tail. The old folk slept in it by the fire. And in a time before hospitals, this was the bed where babies were born and where the dying were watched over, the same panelled recess holding a family's first breath and its last. Often the box bed doubled as a wall itself, dividing the single room of the cottage into a sleeping end and a living end, so that a family could carve two spaces out of one. Everything in that world had to work twice over. Nothing was wasted, least of all warmth. We look back now and might think it cramped, even a little grim. But to the people who slept there it was comfort itself, a snug wooden nest against a hard land, the place you dreamed of when you were far from home. Emigrant Scots wrote of missing the box bed of their childhood, the click of its door, the dark, the safety. It was never grand. Everyone can see the ballistic missile threat posed by Russia – and this threat is growing. At the same time, Russian enterprises that manufacture ballistic missiles are still not subject to strict global sanctions. Some key Russian enterprises involved in ballistic missile production are not under sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Switzerland, and other jurisdictions. Of the seventeen key Russian enterprises involved in producing ballistic missiles, most, unfortunately, can exploit sanctions loops in the jurisdictions of various partners. We need greater coordination, daily engagement with partners on sanctions, and greater synchronization of sanctions. Unfortunately, one of the worst consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine – and of Iran’s tactics as well – is that potential aggressors around the world can see how much harm ballistic missiles can inflict on human life. The global ballistic missile threat will therefore continue to grow, and all anti-ballistic defense capabilities must grow as well. Our FREYJA can become a shared European system providing integrated protection. FREYJA will be quick to produce and battle-tested. Ukraine is capable of manufacturing both the missile itself and the launcher. The decisive factor is cooperation with those European countries and companies that have the radars, sensors, and everything else required for an effective anti-ballistic system. And we already have agreements in place with all of these companies and all the necessary countries. These are the ten countries participating in the Anti-Ballistic Coalition: Ukraine, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom – as well as twelve manufacturers that have already joined. The Anti-Ballistic Coalition and the FREYJA project are open to other participants capable of making a genuine contribution to security across Europe.
