Went to Mt. Athos today. Orthodox Christianity is super sad and gloomy. Read the Philokalia where there is this instruction for prayer where you sit in a corner of a dark room and bow your head down to look at your heart. Eventually, the writer says, you will find endless joy.

there is some kind of hermeneutic hack where everything good and bad is rife with meaning. it could be a coping mechanism but it also could be mental alchemy. like if someone treats you bad you extract so much meaning from it that it isn’t bad anymore (don’t be a doormat though)

Confused yearning — devastation when the object of desire doesn’t offer itself to you, but if it were offered you probably wouldn’t accept it. That’s probably uncertainty in authenticity: if it’s authentic yearning, it wouldn’t be so forked. Abandon inauthentic yearning.

It’s all about hermeneutics. Hermeneutics with a lot of tolerance of ambiguity goes a long way. Occasional danger of thought loops, but you get to learn how to discern and defuse them pretty quick. Openness doesn’t jeopardize discernment.
