@LondonStadium I noticed that a conference in London today on Extreme Heat has been cancelled… because of extreme heat. @UKHSA has extended the red alert to 11pm on Friday 26th June. trains and public transport being delayed or cancelled. I’m fine if you postpone.

This chart is a masterclass in how to make ordinary variation look like a crisis. The biggest problem? The y-axis starts at 500 instead of 0. That massively exaggerates the height differences between the bars, making a relatively modest increase in water demand look dramatic and alarming. 571 ML/d and 670 ML/d are only about a 17% difference — but visually the red bars appear almost twice as large as the green one. Then there’s the colour coding: 🟢 safe 🟡 warning 🟠 danger 🔴 crisis Those thresholds are arbitrary, but the design makes the audience feel like demand suddenly becomes catastrophic at 650. This is why data visualisation ethics matter. Charts shouldn’t be designed to manipulate emotion — they should help people understand reality accurately. A simple zero-based axis and neutral colours would tell the story honestly.

@sewateruk i don’t work in crisis comms, but if I did I would say to customers- I’m sorry we didn’t do x (not the weather or customers at fault), so y is broken , we are doing z to fix it , and estimate full supply back by w. Updates will be hourly.

You'll want to be sitting down for this bit. Water companies are currently £82.7 billion in debt, have paid themselves £85 billion in dividends, leak over a trillion of litres of water per year, dump sewage for almost 4 million hours per year, have been convicted of over 1,200 criminal acts since 1989 and an average of 35% of your bill goes on nothing but paying more interest and yet more dividends. Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water have nearly 200 criminal convictions between them. On 6 August 2024, Ofwat fined them £47m and £17m for sewage dumping. Fines not paid, will not be paid. Firms claim to have invested. No penalty for abusing laws leftfootforward.org/2026/01/public…

Within that there is a questionnaire for (potential) students, graduates, university leavers & others to feed your views into, which is worth doing... committees.parliament.uk/work/9682/stud… Its good to see, and lets hope it brings pressure for improvement. PS Treasury Committee is a cross party committee of MPs, not part of the government. Its job is to scrutinise policy, examine legislation where relevant, and hold ministers and public bodies to account on behalf of Parliament. While it can publish reports and put pressure on the government, but it doesn't have any direct power to compel the government to act.

@susannareid100 @vintedUK Got my money back - as did the seller. But the two parcels I did receive , which I didn’t order and clearly had a label (my name and address) put over the actual recipient. In the end. Vinted just said keep them . Seemed not bothered about them.
