Crafting strong backstory will help you deepen your characters & make readers so much more connected to them. What’s one defining moment in your main character's past?
5 tips for writing backstory: 1. Relate it to the present 2. Strategically reveal it 3. Include some struggle 4. Don’t overtake the main plot 5. Reflect a broader understanding of the character
5. Reflect a broader understanding of the character. The amount of backstory you reveal on the page should be a small sliver of that char’s life—but you as the author should know their full story. Only then can you decide what pieces are relevant for the reader to know.
4.Don’t overtake the main plot. Backstory should enhance & contribute to the main plot w/out overshadowing it. If backstory is taking up a lot of space in the ms, you might restructure the novel to start earlier & show those events in real time or craft a dual timeline narrative.
3. Include some struggle. Backstory should orient us to the challenges your character has faced. This will help the reader connect w/ them emotionally. What are the most defining moments of their life? What hardships have they faced to get to where they are now?
2. Strategically reveal it. Page after page of backstory can become tiresome to read. Instead, sprinkle it in organically (via exposition, flashbacks or dialogue) at relevant points in the story, when that piece of backstory emerges in significance.
