On the sidelines of #POATE2026, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Australia, H.E. Dorothy Samali Hyuha, joined fellow Heads of Mission, tourism leaders, and key stakeholders in strategic engagements focused on strengthening Uganda’s global tourism positioning and deepening international partnerships. The discussions, convened by Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the growing role of economic diplomacy, destination branding, digital innovation, and cross-sector collaboration in driving Uganda’s tourism competitiveness globally. Speaking during the engagement, Permanent Secretary @Tybisa emphasised the importance of stronger coordination between Uganda’s Missions Abroad, @TourismBoardUg, government institutions, and the private sector in expanding Uganda’s international visibility, attracting investment, and positioning the country as a leading tourism destination. With Uganda welcoming approximately 1.64 million international visitors in 2025, the conversations reinforced the growing global interest in the Pearl of Africa and the need to strategically convert diplomatic presence into tourism, trade, and investment opportunities. Watching Spice explore Uganda felt, in my view, like a live example of how destination marketing is evolving. From Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, to cultural engagement with the Buganda Kingdom, wildlife experiences at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, and the breathtaking views of Murchison Falls National Park, the tour captured the diversity of Uganda in one journey. In my opinion, this goes beyond celebrity travel. It shows how modern tourism is now driven by experience-led storytelling through influencers and musicians who carry global attention. When creatives share authentic moments, they don’t just promote destinations, they spark curiosity, emotion, and desire to visit. What stands out is how naturally Uganda delivers: Spiritual heritage Cultural depth Wildlife and conservation Iconic natural landscapes Personally, I think the opportunity now is not creating new attractions, but better packaging and telling the stories we already have. When global artists experience Uganda authentically, they become powerful storytellers for the destination. And that is where tourism marketing is clearly heading. #ExploreUganda #POATE2026

In Uganda, tourism impacts more than 1.5 million people indirectly and close to 700,000 directly. It is interesting that 68% of this workforce is female. The challenge is that many women remain in lower-income roles. It was an honor to speak at the 2nd Regional Women in Tourism Congress hosted by the @UNZimbabwe. I appealed to fellow leaders in the sector to be deliberate about moving from policy to practice if we are to truly uplift women in the sector. As we commemorate the #InternationalLabourDay, may we be deliberate about funding women, promoting them and backing their enterprises/businesses. We must open doors for women deliberately.
