@PallasAaron Most definitely, Prof. Pallas, this is key. I'm implicitly asserting a purpose here- state monitoring for school accountability (not for individual kids' decisions)- but should be explicit. As a wise scholar once taught me ;)
@eduwonkette_jen Contingent, of course, on the purpose of the testing, and the importance of the precision of individual scores. Most of the time, we ought not be using individual scores for high-stakes decisions.

State tests should be matrix sampled to reduce testing time & discourage distortive instruction With that design, we reduce incentives to focus attention on predictably tested standards/item types & to dedicate resources to bubble kids - those on the threshold of proficiency
What justifies making 8 year old children sit for a four hour test. Really. I need to know. What data can they get from a 4-passage, 25 question test that they can’t get from a 2-passage 15 question test. Someone please explain.
I don't think Black parents' reactions to COVID school lockdowns makes sense as an explanation because Black parents were EXTREMELY supportive of school closures well into 2021, more than any other racial group.
I don’t think this has to do with culture wars over wokeness in curricula, b/c only 3% of Biden-Trump swing voters listed education as their top issue. My operating hypothesis is that it’s a consequence of lockdowns and school closures, but would love to see a thorough study 8/n

I increasingly believe the clear answer to this question is "no." As @rpondiscio points out, we need to make the job of teaching doable for people of "average abilities" not saints and not superstars. For most teachers, differentiating instruction for 25+ kids is impossible
